Default How can I push Hotmail emails?

Hello,

I am struggling to get my hotmail emails pushed to my HTC Desire. From what I read Hotmail does not have push functionality. I had an N95 with Nokia Messaging and it pushed my Hotmail emails and Yahoo (non yahoo plus) emails without any problem. They were instant! I miss that.

I have gmail set up which I don't use (which pushes emails just fine). I tried going into Hotmail options and set email forwarding to go to my gmail account but Hotmail gives the following error:

"You're only able to forward mail to a custom domain or an e-mail address that ends in hotmail.com, msn.com, or live.com. Please try again."

I'm thinking of swapping my HTC Desire for an Nokia N900 (that way I will have Nokia Messaging), getting emails pushed to me phone is real important to me. Can anyone help? I don't want to have to get rid of this phone, its awesome!

Set up gmail through their website to pull emails from your Hotmail. It will pull them from there and then push them to your phone.

I've found that it can take anything up to an hour for a Hotmail email to come through to Gmail. I've certainly never found it to be instant. Best I have found is just to poll it fairly frequently, but then I have NO need to truly instant email....nothing I do is that urgent.

I think Gmail pulls the messages once per hour that is where the delays comes from.

Yea its not fast enough, Nokia Messaging on my N95 was almost instant!

I set mine so that hotmail emails are forwarded to gmail. For some reason new emails sent to my hotmail account are being put in the deleted folder (in hotmail). I think gmail is causing it to do that. Anyone else having the same problem?

Gmail is fetching the email via POP3 from Hotmail and is then deleting it from the server - same way as if you fetch mail using POP3 you "move" it to your PC. There is probably a setting somewhere in the Gmail setup to NOT delete email from the POP3 server.

It's less to do with apps and more to do with your mail server.

Something like K-9 Mail (free for Android) will check POP3 email servers for new email at set frequency. Hotmail have a pop3 server (pop3.live.com) but I see errors if I get K-9 to check it more often than every fifteen minutes. I don't think Microsoft want people checking too often.

Now - if you want true instant email without having to use Gmail, then the best option is to register your own domain with an email service such as oneandone.co.uk (no relationship, I have used them for ages and am happy with them). Their IMAP servers allow push email, and K-9 mail works perfectly with them.

My set-up is that I don't use either of the default email apps on my Desire. I don't like the way the Gmail app works (labels and so on, I like folders) and the Mail app was a bit limited.

So I have K-9 Mail and have my Hotmail account set up as a POP3 and set to check every fifteen minutes and to leave the mail on the server. When I then check using the desktop, that checks and downloads the email to the desktop and removes it from the server.

I have my Gmail set up in K-9 as an IMAP mailbox. I get my Gmail on my phone instantly, replies are saved in the sent items on the phone and at Gmail, and then I have the same Gmail account set up as an IMAP mailbox in Outlook. It all stays in sync.

I have four domains of my own and the emails for those go to separate IMAP boxes at oneandone. These are then set up as IMAP accounts in K-9 and again, I get instant pushed email from these.

The only way to get instant Hotmail is, as far as I know, to use Blackberry. RIM seem to have an arrangement with Microsoft and setting up a Hotmail account using Blackberry means you get instant email plus full sync of deleted items, sent items, etc.

Thumbs up

Hi People, my first post here, i thought i might be able to help.

I got my desire the other week and wanted to forward my hotmail to my newly made gmail. Hotmail tells you that you cant forward to other than hotmail, WLM or other microsoft address... there is a way around it.

You need to set up notification texts to your phone when receiving a new email. This can then be set to send no notifications so it doesn't cost you. Once the notifications have been set up (please remember to set no notifications otherwise you'll be charged) then you can enter another address i.e. gmail.

I found this through a website, that i can now not find, however, if i find i can edit to give the link. If there are any problems feel free to ask, and if i have a chance i may be able to put up print screens...

Cheers, Matt

Edit: Website tell you how to do it

hotmail sucks, they won't do this natively off their servers. if you want something more stable than bandaids start making hte transitin to gmail.

Hi Guys,

I found this post on the Android Community forums and done exactly what the original poster told me to do and I now have instant email on my Desire HD.

You need an app called Exchange for Andriod 2.x (only available on andriod 2.X and over) to get instant email.

If you want to get you Hotmail emails to sync (Including ALL Folders) then you need to use a program called:

Exchange for Andriod 2.x (only available on andriod 2.X and over)

(I have tried many other programs but have found none that work, the reason is that they use pop3 and not the activsync protocol)

Now this program is free for 30 days but then you do have to pay for the full licence. So it depends on how much you want to be able to sync to your folders, for me this was a no brainer and I bought the product.

Once its installed use these settings:

Server: m.hotmail.com
Username: your email eg. joeblogs@hotmail.com
Domain: leave this blank
SSL: Enable this/use always
Certificate: SSL

At first it will sync your contacts and inbox only but goto the settings and somewhere in there will be a setting where it asks what folders to sync to.
All you have to do is enable all the folders. (dont forget to save your settings, option is at the bottom of the page)

Resync the app and hey presto.

Hope that helps

Thought I would post this article here as it will help you guys in getting hotmail email pushed to your devices.

Regards,

Jay

Not true. Any mail client that supports ActiveSync (what your instructions cover) will do.
