Default Tunee - Legit or too good to be true?

Found an app for Tunee music on the market. Does anyone know if this app/site is legit? They have very current songs and it's free. Anyone have any experience with this?

Just to test the service, I downloaded songs from Lady Gaga, La Roux, Dire Straits, Merle Haggard, Gordon Lightfoot, and Slowhand (Eric Clapton). According to MP3Tag, the bitrate quality varies from 112 for Dire Straits up to 320 for Eric Clapton.

Some of the choices of songs were slim. Merle only pulled about a dozen results, and about 5 different songs. Of course, the more current/prolific the artist, the more results you'll receive.

As for the legality, I'm not sure. No compensation for the artist usually means something fishy is going on. There is a support link on the bottom of every page, but it is not necessary to donate anything.

After testing the songs, and listening to the downloads, I deleted all of the songs since I already had all of them as part of the original albums at 320 bitrate in another folder on my hard drive.

Well, thanks for the second opinion. I'm going to avoid this just to be on the safe side.

I downloaded a song from it, where does it go? Do you have to play it thru there too or can it be played from the regular media player from the SD card?

It saves it to the Music folder on your SD card. Not sure if it's add supported. Will have to check on that.

I've been using this for a couple of weeks now with no problems. Was going to put a thread up asking what is the catch, but this seems to cover it. While in the US a friend showed me pandora on her blackberry. Do we have anything similar here in the UK? She put in a tune that she liked and it downloaded song after song that was similar and played them automatically. Can't remember if there were ads.

I thought the same thing. I wonder where the songs come from? Are they hosted somewhere or is it like a P2P kind of service (doubtful since I don't recall sharing anything). I use it mainly if I'm out somewhere and need to hear a song, but I don't see any reason to keep the music since I have just about anything I'd want to hear on my PC. Tried one of the apps that streams my iTunes library over the web, which works pretty well aside from the buffering every few seconds. But I don't know. I guess I'll keep it installed and stop using it once it stops working :-)

EDIT: There are a few ads in the program, but even if it's ad support, where does the music come from? One of life's unanswered questions.

Doubtful that it is legal but also doubtful any action will be taken against the end user. Too much risk that they may actually own the music and are just downloading backups. Worst case scenario is you get a letter from VZW asking you to stop downloading illegal content. Also, Pandora doesn't download the songs, it just streams them from their servers, it is ad supported or you can pay 40 bucks a year to stop the ads. You can't choose specific songs but you can usually get it to start on a specific artist.

Isn't this one of those apps that will eventually be shutdown like MusicJunk and iMusicTao, and whatnot?

I don't know how they will ever stop music from being downloaded. You can go out to Google and type in a song name and artist and download any song you want from multiple web sites.

Doesn't the UK have Spotify? I was under the impression that Spotify is like Pandora but better. I could be wrong though.

Some details...

I was suspicious of this app because of how much it apparently wanted access to (contacts, phone, GPS, etc). No reason for it. Consequently, I never installed it. However, the MP3s are searchable on the tunee.net website.

Each MP3 has a direct download link that corresponds with a random hash-like filename.

A simple search for the domain it's hosted on reveals that it's vkontakte.ru, a Russian clone of Facebook which is popular in that country.

So, tunee (and others) are basically indexing ID3 tags or filenames of MP3s that are being uploaded and providing a big database.

By providing a HUGE variety of MP3s for free, they get their app hopefully deployed to millions of devices. In turn, millions of ads get displayed. Buckage follows.

Cute idea, but they should have known that someone would pull the plug on their efforts. Their twitter account is abandoned, their blog has not been updated in months, etc.

tunee uses musicjunk to search. it says it right on the app. Also, this is probably the the best app i've aquired so far. it finds pretty much every artist I search and it downloads the songs quickly.

First, if I like an app, I'd rather pay the guy who actually made it. You know, keep him or her working on more cool apps, and/or improving the one I bought, rather than paying some person who is profiting from stealing other people's work.

Secondly, I'm pretty sure that your post breaks forum rules.

Which, as stated before, means that you need to break out your eye patch and put a parrot on your shoulder before you use it. Also helps to work "Arrgh" into your vocabulary.

Laugh tunee user for several months

I've been using tunee for over 6 months. It was one of the first apps I downloaded. I have had success with every download. Not sure of the legality but I've never gotten a virus and ive had clear music everytime. Thats just my experience though. :-)

No experience of that particular one. However there is a lot of these music MP3 downloaders in the Market. If they're legal or not, all depends if they have the rights to distributed music. Most of them probably not, depending on the country and purpose.

Tunee Music is still around the market as of 7/4/11, and it now costs $11.99!! They compare themselves to other popular "free" music downloader apps like 'music junk' (can't find that one) gtunes (updated to a library as of 7/4/11) and music mate. Something I've noticed about these apps using one for a while myself, is that they all work accordingly, but they all end up getting renamed, being 'published' by different authors, and get pulled from the market all together. If anybody has any experience with limewire or frostwire, it is pretty similar, only I couldn't tell you if is legal or not. I personally enjoy my gtunes app, and it works great on my Evo, but would like a little light shed on the shady end of the table.

Contrary to what is stated many times in this thread, I don't believe Tunee is completely ad free. After installing Tunee, my friend and I both received pop up messages with offers that would remain in the pull down status bar until cleared. It appears as an item with a yellow "favorite" type of star icon to the far left of it OR a green plus sign. Perhaps someone else can confirm this. It doesn't really state that it's related to Tunee, though after several factory resets, this reappears with the installation of the app. So unlike many apps, where the ad will appear within the program execution, Tunee ads appear as a separate entity regardless of whether Tunee is running or not and it would be hard to relate one with the other.

I have been using tunee faithfully for about 6 months and yes it does use Push advertising/pop ups.But its the best app for the job (D/loading directly to your droid on the fly) So I will continue to use it,the small amount of push it sends is not really that bothersome to me and it takes less then a second to clear it.cant beat tunne.

I just downloaded the app and it works good so far. Can't download a lot of songs at once, but for the occasional song or 3, it's fine. There are a few artists/songs (Garth Brooks, Lakeside's Fantastic Voyage) that aren't available on Google or Amazon's MP3 that I found on Tunee. Will probably try to download a few songs an hour today and tomorrow

Well, I got about 15 songs downloaded today, but keep getting "no results or server overloaded" message after a few downloads. Oh well, I'm getting free songs so a little inconvience is not too bad.
