Because launching the internet browser typically uses more of your phones resources than an app. The info from many apps can be accessed through the browser, but apps are usually faster to launch and the information is usually organized better. This is the whole point of having them.
With a good Facebook app (like Blackberry), you wouldn't need to receive Gmail notifications and then go to the internet browser to respond. It could all be integrated into one functional app.
