I would like mobile internet access. I am thinking of changing my verizon phone to an android so I can access the net with my computer via the phone.

Is this effective? Adequate speed?

The alternative is to keep my old cellphone and get a mifi modem.

How do the access speed compare?

Price is substantially different. About $30/month for unlimited net access w/android and $60/month for 5 gig w/mifi 2200.

Not quite sure how much speed you are looking for but i tether my phone and im gettin pretty decent speed. A tab bit slower than DSL using Easytether on a Stock 2.1 Hero. I saw if you are only using it for casual surfing and the ocassional youtube fix then tethering is well worth it. I used about 5GB worth of data last month tethering and with Sprint its truly unlimited over the phone so its nothing they can do about it. If you are a hard core surfer and you wanna have 20 browsers open at the same time, do online gaming, and download a few movies then you might just want a mifi.
