I read this thread back in October when I first started development on my RPG, and it's just been released on the Android Market today.

If you enjoyed the Final Fantasy games, then this one should appeal. It's called Discretion and is a 3D turn-based RPG with 3 unique endings based on your choices along the way. Check out Discretion, an Android Role-Playing Game (RPG) for QR codes/links for the demo and full versions. Comments & criticism welcome!

Thankfully I can say with a co-worker during the training, but I need an instructor who can take the time to explain it to me including the differences (and yes I tried reading the Java programming for dummies book).

Angel Andor's Trail

I have found Andor's Trail to be extensively entertaining. It is a single player RPG, and so far all the games I've downloaded from the site have been free and safe. All you have to do is select a category, pick an interesting-looking app, go under 'Download', select the most recent file, and click on the 'Click here' button. Go to Astro, install, and have fun!
Download Andor's Trail for Android

I am playing a text based RPG game for last 2+ years. It is a nice game and now it is a part of my life . I play it daily and yeah I am addicted to it.
You can give it a try. the name of the game is TORN! and it rocks. try it with the following link, I will get a little benefit for recruiting you and in return I will help with all the ingame support you need like (money, protection, housing) the game has so many things to do.. you can marry, divorce, fight other people, do crimes to earn money, race with your custom cars, buy and sell items, own a company and run it as director ... It will take a day if I want to write all the things. try it I bet you will like it.

Realms of Fortune

Realms of Fortune

I just finished developing a first person RPG called Realms of Fortune. Here are some of the features implemented in the current version:
  • A very large, randomly generated world full of lakes, hills, dungeons and more. Each game you play is a whole new adventure.
  • Dozens of unique creatures.
  • Real-time, first person combat and exploration.
  • A huge variety of upgradeable weapons and armor.
  • Firearms, including scoped weapons.
  • The ability to create potions from plants that you find.
  • Seamless world, even when going in and out of dungeons.
  • Swimming, diving, and underwater dungeons
  • Fishing and hunting.
  • An exciting main quest.

I been meaning to pick up realms of fortune I know how much work you did. You should make post.

The Symphony of Eternity is android 2D final fantasy. The quality of this is on par with something Square would of made themselves. It shouldn't disappoint any 2d ff fan. Sword and Earrings is also an top notch tactic RPG but not graphically. Gameplay is pure addiction though and never boring.

I've struggled to find a decent roguelike so far on Android. I've tried a bunch of them, but most turn me away with a bad interface/user experience.

I 2nd Symphony of Eternity. Get it on the market for ~60% off while you can. An excellent game for any 2D Final Fantasy fans.

If you're playing emulated games, you might want to consider the Breath of Fire series. It plays like FF and is a lot of fun.

I'd be interested in seeing a well-made rogue-like game. The best I found for PC was ZAngbandTK, mainly because of the graphics. As with the other Angband games (same type of game as Rogue), there are tons of different creatures to fight and equipment to find as well as both above and below ground areas.

Oh yeah, if you count emulators then there is a world of great RPGs to play with Genesis, SNES and PSX games...heck you may want to try what I consider the grandaddy of RPGs in the USA...Phantasy Star! :-)

I'd be interested in your list of favorites! (especially since I'm the dev of one of the roguelikes in the market )

well so far I find most of the roguelikes disappointing. The nethack ports are to small and hard to read with clunky controls. traquehack has no control scheme at all. so far the only one i keep finding my self playing is legends of yore and that is a coffee break roguelike at best. its repetitive and the sounds are grating but you can pick up and play rightaway. As for your farway land, that comes off more of a zelda clone than a roguelike. I havent had much time to play it but the whole opening scene felt way to long and i couldnt skip through it so i stopped playing.

Yeah, I was worried the opening scene would be annoying but then thought "it's only 9 clicks or so and the player will never have to see it again, so..." Note that you'll have to enter a dungeon - either Training or main dungeon via "Go Forth", then save (or get killed ) for the progress to be recorded and the "crow yammering on" cut-scene to be skipped in subsequent plays. Also, a quick way to save in a dungeon is just hit the home key. Then the next time you start the game, it'll also skip the "VOYAGE TO..." fading in scene.

The game is actually more of a Shiren clone (Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer), but western gamers may not recognize the Mystery Dungeon games as roguelikes due to the more elaborate tilesets. But rest assured - dungeon layouts, monster/item/trap placements are random. And most items (beads, herbs, scrolls, pouches) are unidentified until used (in the hardcore dungeon at least).

Thanks for the roguelike info!

Just found out today that Chunsoft (maker of the original Mystery Dungeon games) released a Shiren game for Android. Unfortunately, it's only in Japanese, but gamers with nihongo skills have at it!

Default Zenonia 1 & 2 cheap right now

Was browsing the thread for a good RPG to download for my phone. Looked up Zenonia on the market and saw that both Zenonia and Zenonia 2 are available for $0.99 right now. I haven't played them yet, but from what people are saying on here, they certainly seem worth downloading for such a cheap price!

Legends of Yore is really good and getting better with each update. Just want more loot but the gameplay is addictive, it looks great, and good UI.

I also came upon this thread when I began work on my own indie RPG project for Android. I see a few other devs have come along to strut their stuff which is to be expected, and I don't want to come off as just advertising, I just think my project may be what you guys are looking for

It's called BladeQuest, and I released a demo to the market last week.
My focus is entirely on a well-written and engaging story. The art, music, and play-style are all nostalgic and not trying to be new. Everyone I've met who has played it has told me it truly brings them back to the good ole days.

It's the most fun I've had on a project and I hope you guys check it out! (it's free)

The Zenonia Saga's very addicting. The best 1 is Zenonia 3 as it is the newest one and is free, unlike the other ones.

Spectral Souls is a great one if you like tactics based rpgs.
It's $15 but totally worth it. The graphics are great, controls are easy to learn and use.
It plays just like Final Fantasy Tactics.

RPG is a broad phenomenon - try naming some of your favorites...
Me, I dig the classics ... Baldurs Gate, Fallout I & II that kinda stuff, but I have a hunch that's not what you're looking for.

Dungeon Hunter 2 is a fantastic warm-up until Diablo 3 arrives on PC :P

Has to be purchased through gameloft.com as far as I know.

I've made a old school kinda Diablo like isometric Action RPG called Flailery RPG. I was going for Diablo but with touch controls for a flail and a bit simpler. Instead of having one weapon, you got a flail that you move with your other finger and it has 3 slots for different kind of heads to use.

First Post for me. I only joined the android army about two weeks ago picked up my galaxy s2 and never been happier. Ive already managed to get baldurs gate 2 running perfectly on the device with the help of GemRB you can run any of the infinity engine games on android thats Icewind dale 1 and 2 {2 has some issiues} baldurs gate 1 and 2 and best of all planescape torment arguably the greatest rpg of all time and best of all its free provided you own the original games. Also managed to get heroes of might and magic two running and three is busy being ported. At the moment im playing around with some Psx emulators, desperate to get valkryie profile running on my droid {best psx RPG ever} and there are so many more. The only real issue is some games ecspecially the infinity games would definetely need about a 4 inch screen otherwise the text is just way to tiny, on my 4.3 inch screen with a font enlarger its pretty comfotable.

So overall I would say the android platform has the most to offer {excluding the pc} in terms of rpgs as long as you are prepared to fiddle around a little, the emulators make this a truly great platform for rpg lovers like me>>

This might be my first post I've been looking for a thread like this! Thanks for all teh info. I just trie done I saw highlighted on androinica this week and it is great.. called Destinia and it is very much like a NES classic I loved - Legend of Crystania. I think its developers are the same who make teh zenonia series (Gamevil?) Check it out.

edit: I should say I have a sgs2 and it runs great on it.

If you are looking for a nice RPG, then my favorite example is definitely Zenonia. The first two games are a dollar, but the third game is free. Now Zenonia isnt a turn based game like Final Fantasy, it is an RPG that focuses on real-time combat. There is also another free RPG by the same company called Destina. Other than that, I have nothing for you but emulators, but Im sure you are already aware.

I've reviewed 5 RPGs in depth on my blog - RPG Alphadia, Illusia, Symphony of Eternity, Destinia, and the new release from Kemco Games, Grinsia. Feel free to check it out - I'd recommend 3 out of 5 of them. =)

Default new RPG updates

Hi all! First post!! Woo!

Anyway, I'd like to add onto what the previous post said... although maybe I should start a new thread since this one is so old...

Grinsia is a great one for those who like final fantasy-like turn based RPGS. so far a good story and some decent side quests with moderate difficulty. Since this thread started on just looking for RPGs that are NOT action-based but more strategy id like to focus on those. There are a huge amount of new RPGs like the ones above mentioned, but by a company called megames. Ive been searching the web all over for more info but it seems the company is only currently releasing these in what looks like Chinese. Some are free, which you can try and even without understanding it can see the RPGs they have are pretty fun (I made it a few hours into one without understanding a word 0.o but based on emoticons they use I can get a gist of whats happening in the story haha)

Anyway if you want to check them out the paid ones look pretty amazing. As in if it was in english I would have bought them outright a long time ago. Try searching for "RPG DESTINY SAGA" by megames.... the other titles are in what looks like Japanese so searching would be tough

I was wondering if anyone else has seen or heard of these games and if any one is willing to at least partially translate or play and post something to describe whats happening at key points at least?... if you're as crazy and determined like me I can play through these games through trial and error and still have fun .

But check them out at least, and you'll see what I mean if you're a final fantasy fanatic as well. Otherwise im playing Grinsia right now and its a solid game... check out all games made by KEMKO. Turn based gold

Is RPG destiny saga available in English? The screenshots look fantastic, bit it appears to be in Japanese.

This thread duplicates Best RPG Games so let's take it to that one.
