Yeah.. It is odd. It must have something to do with the way the rendering is done.

Soon as it starts and is playing on its own before you touch the screen to start there is TONS of artifacts.
(Not just my phone but my wifes stock Nexus One)

After you touch the screen to start it just goes dim and locks up.

You'll need to find a copy of the full game, then take the .pak files from it and replace the .pak files on your SD card in the baseq2 folder with the ones from the full version.

Great work on this port so far! I'm really looking forward to the possibilities for sure. I didn't see anyone else post about using it on the backflip, so I guess I'll be the first. I get between 7 and 14 fps and it looks pretty nice. So far, no sound, I don't think, but otherwise not bad. It would be nice if the "Backtrack" on the backflip could be used for aiming, but I don't expect code to be made just for that one phone. Maybe it functions the same as many phones' trackballs? Who know, but it would be quite nice to see one day.

I really need to get the controls down, because I just can't get the hang of it. Will practice more and maybe tweak some things and update later on.

Keep up the good work!

It runs on my N1. It took a few minutes to figure it out...its kind of laggy which is confusing to me because of the processor on this thing. I can't figure out how to change weapons or to do multiplayer....any suggestions?

An awesome project so far, i'm impressed. However...

I downloaded 1.8 on my HTC Incredible, as well as the demo .pak. So far so good. However when I go to play it there are several issues:
- The levels do not have any textures (you only see shaded triangles) but the weapons, enemies, and barrels are fine.
- The game also slows to a crawl whenever there are explosions or lots of weapon fire (possible related to lighting).
- The HUD is messed up in that you don't see ammo or any icons, and the main menu is broken because there are no images on screen... you can navigate you can't see what you have selected.
- Lastly, the sound is somewhat broken... the demo starts without sound and seemingly randomly the sound will start up at some point later.

I really hope you'll be able to fix these issues because I would love to give the game a go.

Yea there are issues with the Incredible. It should run this game better than any phone out. It ran better on my Eris. It looks like Julien has stopped working on development for now. He has not posted on here since 2/2. It really is a bummer, this game has so much promise and I was so looking forward to playing on my Incredible.

I tried this on my Desire earlier (using the demo .pak) and upon loading it just seems to go in to demo mode and plays by itself, when I touch the screen it just goes blank, I'm so keen to get it working (as it seems other Desire owners have) so if I'm just being stupid and missing something obvious please tell me.

Great work on what you've done so far though

Anyone getting "stuck keys" on this? On my 2.1 Moto Droid, it'll play perfectly fine for a while and then one of the controls gets locked up (almost always seems to be "forward" or "back") and I'm stuck perpetually moving in that direction (it will respond to another direction but if I let go it returns to moving in the stuck direction).

I deleted the config file to default all the controls but it still does it.

Okay, I figured this out, the accelerometer was enabled. Doh! Fordward and back tilt is definitely a misfeature on the droid. I like the side to looking, though. Guess, I'll look at the config file and see if just front/back pedal with tilt can be disabled.

I REALLY hope the dev. gets back on it, this game was amazing back when it was released, and I still remember it. Countless hours spent playing. I would honestly not care one BIT paying $10 for this if it ever gets finished and published on the market with online multi-player.

-edit-
Just tried it on my new Evo, the FPS is fine until the first explosion and blood comes on the intro demo video. After I tap the screen to get to the main menu, it locks up. Even with eco mode on, and no sound. Lots of little artifacts appearing on the screen as the demo goes through as well.

Good job! This looks fantastic on the galaxy s!
trouble is I can't play the game, there seems to be no way to use the menu. I can't find any kind of enter key!

The demo however is flawless 60fps no graphics glitches.

I've started hacking on the source, I've already fixed my issue be setting the volume down button to enter. Its technically my first android app attempt!
It probably bit too heavy for a first app but we'll see. I am a java programmer by profession so I'm sure it wont take me too long to get up to speed

I tried it on desire, a bit laggy and the same problem as a few others about how to get out of the video demo. Try draging across the screen from left side to right. Or tap the screen randomly. I got it working but i can't see the FPS and i believe that the resolution of the game comes "out" of the screen, i.e. to big to see the FPS/start game button.

How do I install this on my htc evo? I've got an original quake2 disc and windows vista. I haven't installed any nonmarket apps so I'm not sure what to do.

Runs extremely smoothly on my Droid X. It's at 60fps most of the time. Probably 3-4x faster than my Incredible. Very cool.

Sheesh, this game brings back memory of my senior year in HS. Dguy, are you sure it's 60? did you run the timedemo? The game is also extremely smooth for me on my Galaxy S Vibrant. I'm probably getting a 70-100 fps if you're getting 60. I used WIFI Keyboard. Yeah, I can't move with the mouse but I can enter a game I opened up DM17 with 8 bots and the phone just delivers. Awesome GPU.

The fps counter is in the upper right hand corner and most of the time it is stuck at 59/60. It'll go down to 45 sometimes but that's the lowest I've seen it go.

Im in the high 60fps on my Droid-X. I hooked up my sons Wii controller via bluetooth and can now control the game with the Wii d-pad and nun-chuck. I used a free app on the marketplace called WiimoteController to complete the handshake between the phone and controller. The only problem is I cant seem to get the "look up" and "look down" functions to work. Anyone have any ideas on this?

I have galaxy s and it runs perfectly.
having come from a rather long time gaming the controls are very difficult to use. it would be far more intuitive not to show the lines but to have invisizi zones. show the overlay for new players but have the option to hide later.
look should be touch screen contolled on left fore finger. move should be on the acellerometer thing and upper right should be jump crouch small zones in size.
lookspring is totally irritating and should be removed asap.
tilt should be forward back straffe left right no rotate. maybe rotate for weapon cycle but no more.
fire could be a the square menu button.
new d pad is great for menus. at least I can kind a play but moving firing and looking are not available on current controls.
the controls I have described would give near pc control.
keep up the great work and i hope to see more updates soon as i played this game and its predesesors for years a kid and loved them.

I'm trying to get Quake 2 for the android running on the emulator, and I'm having trouble getting it running. It keeps giving the pak0.pak not found error. I've copied pak0.pak to the quake 2 android bin folder and it doesnt see it. Anyone got a solution?

Another question, anyone know if android NDK can run on mingw on windows as well as cygwin?

Galaxy S Vibrant: 59-60fps. Once dropped down to 45, when it rendered *hurricane strings* five explosions at once.

However, while I can play the game, the controls make me want to hurt kittens. Silly frustrations. For example, you can't shoot while using view control. If there's something at a different elevation, you're screwed.

Any ports with good multitouch controls?

Works fine on my Droid Eris. When I use dpad it disables the ability to move camera around and open the touchscreen menu. So It's impossible to play without sensor which I don't like to use. Please fix.

Hi, I have one question, is possible to run this port in software rendering? It can theoretically raise fps on lowend devices without working hardware 3d acceleration. My experiences with the ports of Quake 1 implies this.

Default Shooting with Samsung Galaxy

Hi

I am using the Samsung Galaxy.
THe game appears great in this device (however, it is a bit dark).
The speed is fine.
The steering without touchpad on the screen in general is acceptable.

Only shooting is very complex without keyboard:
Regarding the VIEW area of the touchscreen, it can be used for precise aiming :
press the VIEW are, moves are stopped, and controle the crosshair with the finger.
Then for shooting, press the center button of the DPAD ( = ENTER usually mapped on +attack)

I would like to get a tap on the cross hair cursor to shoot. (Move by tilting the phone, aim with the crosshair (finger on screen) and shoot by tapping the crosshair).

How can I customize the controls getting the behaviour described above?

thanks

I've tested this on my xperia x10 mini pro with Android 2.1.
The game runs fine. Though, it takes some time for the sound to kick in, once it does, it plays smoothly. Same thing with the FPS, stating a game with a bit low fps but then it goes just fine.

The main issue for me was using the physical keyboard. I remapped the movement keys to "wasd". As I don't have full arrow keys on my hardware keyboard. The new keys don't respond or do any action. only enter for shooting, and the left/right arrow of the keyboard work. Nothing else does.
The screen is small to use the on screen buttons so I hope this issue could be tackled sometime soon.

Cheers and thanks alot for the game (:

Tried on my Galaxy S II, framerate is pegged at 59 fps most of the time but does drop allot during some of fighting.

Couldn't see anyway to play it though.

Pretty much this, Q2 is totally my favorite game of all time, it was my first fps and get this, took me almost a year of constant play to get through it!! Love this game!!

Ive got 1.4 on my nexus 1 and 1.8 on my nook color,1.4 plays great,1.8 however is unplayable.(it renders beautifully) but the controls are impossible, could we possibly revert to the old conrols?
Are there some config files perhaps that I could swap from 1.4 to 1.8? Would that even work? Oh god I need a Nookie Quake fix. Any ideas gratefully accepted!

Default Coolness

Just wanted to thank you for the excellent port. I just put CM6 on my Droid 1 and dug out my old, scratched-up QII cd and somehow managed to pull the pak files off. Instructions were easy from the website and after a few burps and farts (settings, erasing a comment from the .cfg), it booted right up and I'm getting sweet, fast frame rates. Accelerometer use seems slippery at first, but actually gets more intuitive as you continue. Closing the keyboard on the game crashes it. Nothing too weird beyond that so far!

Anyhow, great port, nice work and can't wait to see what you'll come up with next!

And my friends are going to go green with envy - that always helps!
