Default Gameloft now using Airpush? UPDATE: No

Yesterday I and many others started seeing posts pushed to our notification tray from Asphalt 7 (Gameloft).

I emailed Gameloft customer support to ask about it, and they basically confirmed they are now using Airpush. Here is their response:

Quote:
We are sorry for the inconveniences.

In order to opt-out from the pop-up on screen notifications appearing on your Android device, please enter Airpush - Mobile Ad Network | Push Notification Ad Network | Android App Monetization into your phone browser. Normally, after you do that, you should be given 2 ways to opt-out. -Manual way. It requires you to enter your IMEI in the corresponding box and click on "Submit" -Selecting "Opt Out App" will opt you out automatically.
If you aren't familiar with Airpush, it is a company that offers a service to Devs to push ads to your notification tray.

Users who have Android 4.1 and up can turn off notifications from apps in the system app settings menu, but only people with 4.1 and up, and only if you know it's there. Gameloft doesn't exactly go out of their way to make this clear, as in... not at all.

How do you feel about Airpush? How do you feel about this move by Gameloft? If a game dev as big as Gameloft is doing this now, what does it mean for our notification trays?

It means yet another way for even more companies to spam us directly. As for entering my imei number on a dodgy website erm no not going to happen. I hate airpush and flatly refuse to use any app or game that uses it.

"Hello,

Airpush is a sleazy ad service that is used completely outside our games."

(there...fixed it)

Well let's think about it like this.

Not many take advantage of the in-app purchases and the devs do need a way to be supported, and the air-push supports them.

In my opinion, any app you pay for should be ad free. If Gameloft is putting ads in free gamesthen that's just the price you pay. A lot of effort goes into these apps and the developers should be compensated. If an app developer puts ads in paid games, I consider that unethical. I did my part and paid so I expect them to do their part and not pester me with ads.

AirPush is different in my opinion because it goes outside of the app to push ads on you. I find this reprehensible. If I'm not using the app (meaning it's not running) I will not accept being pestered with ads. FOR ME that's an absolute. There are enough alternative apps for pretty much everything so it's an easy enough technique to avoid.

Also consider that if more people paid for the apps they used, these aggressive techniques wouldn't be necessary.

Some people are totally cool with AirPush which is their decision and I respect their opinions.

Last week I mentioned on that it appeared Gameloft might be using AirPush in the game Asphalt 7.

When I started getting messages from the game popping up in my notification tray I contacted Gameloft customer support and was directed to visit the AirPush opt-out page to supply my IMEI number. I also asked in the Gameloft forums if they were using AirPush and was specifically told by an admin that AirPush was an ad service they used in their games.

Today Phandroid is reporting that Gameloft denies they use AirPush (corroborating a statement from AirPush) and claiming that the misinformation users received about AirPush was an internal error. They also claim that the notifications should not have occurred and that they have already "fixed the problem". As of last night, however, i was still getting the messages.

So, if they aren't using AirPush then that's a good thing, I'm glad. I despise everything AirPush stands for, and I won't install apps that use it. I will buy apps I like, and I will even install apps with ads, but stay out of my notification tray!

I still can't help but wonder, however, what sort of internal error would lead TWO employees to tell me it was AirPush? I doubt Gameloft will answer that question.

You can read the new news on Phandroid.

My cypad isn’t compatible with play store so I can’t download the opt-out app. (Why doesn’t Airpush make the download available on their site?)

This tablet is also not a phone so it has no IMEI etc. number. That means I’m either stuck with the push content or, like other similar users, I have to dump a bunch of apps that I’d like to use.
