So i realized today on my way home from work that my cars Clarion CD deck has a USB connector for hooking up thumb drives to play music off of them. I figured this HAS to work with the G1... and it does!
I was able to hook the G1 charge and play the music off the SD card through the G1 with ease.
Just set the G1 to act as a usb drive, and you can play music and charge your phone via USB while driving.
So keep that in mind if you're going to be getting a new car CD player, get one with USB (pretty common on new CD players) and you'll be glad you did.
yea doesn't that suck. my brand new $48,000 bmw 335i cant do that because there aint no USB holes anywhere, but ofcourse a $50 stereo unit found at your local pepboys does. I would love to connect my android to the car but doing such would probably require ripping out the sound controls which is connected onscreen to the navigation controls which is connected to BMW's patented iDrive system.
Oh and did i mention my alternative? its an ipod connectivity kit (aka wires connected to your glove box) for a mere $250.
doesnlt it have an auxilary port? if so all you need is an adapter for the g1. it wont charge it but you can play music. ( youll have to control it on the g1 though, not the radio.)

I have a the USB option on my 135i, I leave a 32gb flash drive in there... Guess I'm in luck... great to hear we can charge and use our phones for music in the car. Now I just need to get the 16gb card to hold a decent amount of music.

tell me more....
i know nothing about car stereos lol i have an aux port on my faceplate and i have one that hooks up to my mp3 player..but it would be cool to play music thru my phone...
I had the same idea, that is how I usually charge/play my Ipod. I have the Kenwood reciever, and when I plug in the G1, it gives me a N/A and wont play my music. O well, good thing I have an AUX port for backup.
i pluged min in and it wont let me play music how do i set it to play music
how do i do that i pluged mine in and it wont play anything

htc any car stereo shop can add a adaptor to be put at a location that makes sense for you have bmw just do it
no i'm just saying. USB was not an option available to me even though really cheap cd players do. I'm quite happy listening to an MP3 cd.. lol x] oldschool yo.
Awesome. When i eventually get around to passing my driving test I'm gonna put a new CD player in my car (currently I've just got the standard one that came with it). Was planning on getting one with USB anyway but that's sold it now.

awesome! i was wondering the same thing... googled it, and what do you know i found this forum... Just signed up WOO-HOO! No USB port in my truck but I do have an auxillary port. Im going to go buy the aux cable after work and give it a shot. I will let you know! Thx
Damn, I'm kind of out of touch with car audio... but this is something I'm definitely going to have to consider. Do you have any recommendations on affordable/quality units?
Dension has a system called the Gateway that hooks up with OEM headunits and offers USB and iPod connectivity. If I get one of those, it's all a matter of a holder for the G1 such that I can leave the iPod in the glovebox, and then put the G1 in the holder and connect a USB to mini-USB cable to it discreetly from the Gateway unit in the glovebox. When a call comes in, I can have it run the call over BT to the Gateway's Bluetooth module and take the call using the car speaker system and a mic, or over to my BT headset.
I have a kenwood and I have been doing that since I bought my treo. now that i have my g1 i can still do that. plus it recharges the phone at the same time.
Check this out for those of you that don't want to install or buy cables. It connects to your phone via bluetooth and then connects to your radio via FM and you can take calls through your stereo and play music off the phone. I haven't tried it yet but seams it would meet many needs here except charging so you would need a cable for that.
Im hoping g1 supports stereo bluetooth later on, my new Mazda 6 supports stereo bluetooth audio and i'll be able to control it from the deck which is pretty cool, for now though I will wire up with the AUX jack.
It was one of the main reasons i wanted this thing was to replace my phone and my ipod. My Bronze G1 came with a headphone adapter and a set of headphones. I just AUX input into my stereo from that. It is nice, especially watching movies or shows while on lunch in the vehicle.
Is this a USB port thats connected to your stereo? Or just a "power only" USB port?
you will also have to set your stereo's sorce to the USB device.
You will need to make sure the SD card is set to "use for USB storage"
I just bought a 2009 HOnda Civic EX that supports USB. According to the user manual this only works with iPods. But I tried my G1 anyway. It certainly hooks up and connects nicely using my adapter. I then clicked on the USB button on the radio and hit PLAY On my G1 music player. The sound was coming out of the G1 but nothing thru the car speakers

That won't work entirely until T-Mobile activates the new Cupcake update. Once that's done, stereo BT should work. I am getting a BT car kit as well for this purpose.
I read somewhere that you need to be sure you are using the USB-->Mini USB cable that either came with your G1 or make sure if you buy a new cable that the MiniUSB side is an 11pin (new) as opposed to a 5 pin MiniUSB, which are more common.
Also, be sure to set your sd card as a mass storage device, the only way I found to check this is using anyCut (from app market) to create a shortcut to the SD card, once you open that shortcut there is a checkbox. To do this, download anycut, then long press on your home screen to add a shortcut, choose shortcut then pick the AnyCut application, form there choose activity, scroll way down to SD Card. Now when you press on the newly created shortcut you should see a checkbox with the text "Enable USB mass storage", make sure it is checked.

Normally when you plug the usb in it runs as mass storage after you mount the sd card under notifications.
Has anyone actually had success charging the G1 on a usb headunit though? I know most usb chargers are only 300 - 500mA and the G1 needs atleast 1A to properly charge the device.
Hi all, I got My touch G3 and I plug the cable into my usb-car, the phone is charging but when the car is try to retrive the mp3 files. I'm getting a message on car audio display 'Reading error'
I have a nokia express music and I do not have any problem, my car read all the songs ...
I mount the as mass storage and nothing
Also I set up on my phone 'Unknown sources' as available. not nothing
I have a sony CDX-GT630UI car stereo and a mytouch and it will not play throw the USD connection i have an AUX but you cant charge it and us the AUX at the same time, because you have to us the USB to plug in the Stereo connection with this crazy little converter it comes with. Is there some App that can fix this? Anyone Know?
Just had a borrowed Vauxhall Insignia for 24 hours. Great stereo USB and 3.5m jack. It will play direct from USB media but has to be formatted as FAT with a whole host of restrictions. I really use spotify now so I didn’t bother with the USB apart from charging it.
The unit can handle Ipod protocols to play directly from the device so I’m sure it wont be long before someone makes an app to handle that. If while there at it they can make spotify work too that would be really great.
600 miles of spotify was great though.
I do this periodically, one thing i was told, is that if you use the AUX port that if you run pandora it will play through the car..thats what i really wanna do..If thats the case, any one know of a USB to AUX port adaptor? lol

I'm sure you know your car better than I, but my parents have 2 '07 BMW's, and they both have USB ports on the inside of the center console. They're very inconspicuous and hard to acces--right on the front wall of the console. Looking in the console from the back seat would give you the best vantage point. My dad didn't realize he had one for a year.
Does anyone have a partitioned SD card? Does it work? Sony and Pioneer both say they don't support partitions. Also, if you're using Apps2SD, you can't use it for music (mass storage) and apps at the same time, can you?

You can't just connect the USB port to a 3.5 mini jack. The device would have to support audio via USB. People in this thread are mounting their memory cards via USB which is entirely different.

HTC phones use the ExtUSB connector, so they do actually have analog audio out of the USB port. This will certainly not work connected to a stereo's USB input, but it will work connected to a stereo's Aux input using an adapter:
This is a purely analog audio connection, so you can't control the music from the stereo or anything. It's exactly the same thing as running a cable to the headphone jack.
The USB-to-USB connection makes the phone act like a hard drive, and then you control the stereo and it reads files from the hard drive and plays them.

My iPhone 3G (bear with me, my question is about Androids) connects to the USB jack on my cheapo Pioneer head unit. It charges the phone and plays the iPod (but obnoxiously locks the touchscreen controls and displays "ACCESSORY CONNECTED" screen). If I press the home button it brings up all my apps, and I can then run Pandora (or other audio apps) which then play thru the USB. On occasion it tends to glitch out and restart the iPod app (usually during highway driving - perhaps when switching towers?) starting with the first track (sorted alpha by songname) but for the most part it works.
Still with me? I wanna know, would an Android phone (such as the HTC Incredible) would do the same thing? Apple is making me jailbreak (an option I do not like) or buy a new phone to get multitasking (listening to Pandora but need to bring up the maps app) so I'm putting Android on the table too.
