Post Getting Donut on my hero

Hi there,

I want to get Donut onto my HTC Hero… what I thought would have been a simple task has not turned out to be so simple.

I brought a HTC off ebay and I am currently in Australia on the virgin network.

I wanted to update to cupcake so I found a HTC update on

HTC

I downloaded and installed it, which worked fine, except I can not purchase apps from the app store.

I then started reading up about rooting/moding/etc and it appears I’ve come around at the worse time with one of the major mods (CyanogenMod) being taken down by Google and all the guides I seam to follow through for that mod seam to fail or be missing files.

Can I purely and simply just install the Google Android Operating environment (no mods, no teleco provider specific firmware, no phone specific firmware) just the google android operating environment??

Failing that, can someone point me in the direction of a way to get donut onto my HTC Hero?

Failing that, can someone help me gain access to the purchasing options on my market place.

I'm in a similar situation to you, although I'm on UK T Mobile network. I used the same update for mine from the HTC link (ROM Upgrade for HTC Hero) and although it got rid of the lag it limited the number of apps on Android Market and I can no longer download paid apps.

As far as I know most networks are sending out Donut OTA at the moment, some people have received it, most haven't yet. It will probably be uploaded to the HTC side soon so it can be downloaded as well. Android market's been upgraded in donut so it should hopefully sort that problem.

I'm on the T-Mobile network in the US, and I received Donut over a week ago. It was a huge headache full of freezes, force-close messages, and generally unreliable performance (though apparently not everyone had these kinds of problems). I ended up rooting and installing Cyanogenmod.

Cyanogen had to take down his roms that included Google's proprietary apps, but he now has a version up without the apps plus a work-around to legally install the missing apps. I don't know if it works for the Hero though. It looks like all his instructions and roms are specifically for the G1 (HTC Dream) and the MyTouch 3G (HTC Magic).
