Default New Android User with OTA upgrade question

Hi everyone, I am a new Android user and I just got my Motorola Milestone (OS version 2.1 update 1) about 2 weeks.

I bought that from ebay and its an unlock phone. I am using Rogers network.

I searched the forum and saw lots other users said when Froyo 2.2 is out for MS, the phone shall receive an OTA notice automatically.

I got couple quick questions which are:

If my phone was not purchase from Rogers and Rogers doesn't even carry Milestone. Will I still able to get the OTA upgrade?

If not, is that I have to "root" (which I don't know how to do and will need to do more research on it) the phone in order to upgrade by myself?

Thanks a lot for your time.
