Tomorrow I leave iphone for EVO, what are must do's with new phone??
so im excited to leave ios and mr stevie jobs for the HTC Evo!! I'm new to android and don't know much about it (YET) . I look forward to playing with the phone and learning my new device. Can you guys help me out here and tell me what are the must knows to the android system and what are must have apps. Thanks so much i look forward to being part of your online community.

something you can do before you get the evo: export your contacts from your current phone, make a google account you want to use with the evo (if you don't have one already) and import those contacts to that account
when you get the phone, you log in to that account and sync the contacts

I already have a gmail account but do not like gmail at all. yahoo is my prefferred email provider. Can I not sync wth yahoo?

You can export your contacts from Yahoo and then import them into gmail.
Whether you like gmail or not, using the gmail/google contacts interface with a computer is the easiest and fastest way to edit your phone contacts.
I would start getting used to gmail if you have an Android phone. Even if you don't want to use it as your primary email... all of google's cloud apps are going to offer integration.
For example, if you have someone's address in their contact info, then you can use your google maps app to automatically give gps directions to their house.
so pissed damn sprint received a shipment of only 6 phones. What huge mess they have. Way to show you can't even handle a simple supply and demand issue. 6 phones, really? 6 phones??? there was only 10 people in line and not all 10 could get one. i was one of them. But seriously 6 phones???? Been on back order for weeks and all you could bring in is 6 phones??? Kind of makes me appreciate att a little more.

I actually created a google account when I first got my phone. Glad I did. Before I used yahoo, but I'm liking the integration with Gmail/Google account.
Must have apps:
Handcent Text message app
Astro File Manager
My Back up Pro (or Titanium for root users)
All the old console emulators (PSX4Droid, Gensoid, SNESoid, NESoid, Gameboid, etc)

Get on as many waiting lists as you can. I actually got really lucky. One day after putting my self on the list at my local sprint store, I went to best buy and 2 other sprint stores. The last store I went to had one, but some kid was humming and haaing about getting it. So, I told the guy that if he didn't buy it, I would.
About 15 min later, got a call from the first store I went to the day before, and they told me that I could come in to pick up my new phone. Right after I got off the phone with that guy, I got a call from the other store saying I could have the phone the other kid wanted because he changed his mind. I told him to go ahead and sell it, since I was already on my way to the first store! Like I said, pretty lucky.
Just be proactive if you want the phone.....they're hard to get right now. But it's worth it. You'll never look back...I haven't (former ip3g).

QFT. I had a different mail provider before my first G1. Right when I got my G1, it made me log in with my gmail account. I thought it was strange, but I went along with it.
I realized how easy to sync everything (no action required on my part) if I just moved it (calendar/contacts, email, etc) to gmail. It took a while to get used to the gmail format on the computer, but I've never looked back. It's a slick integration.

man guys i guess im you guys when you first bought your phone. I do not like gmail at all. I love yahoo and thier new look (outlook-ish). I've had a gmail account but just do not use it because it looks to plain and dull for me. and i hate the fact that i cant drop and drag emails into folders nor does it give me a preview of my emails like yahoo does. I might use gmail just to do the syncing i guess. Maybe little by little it'll win me over.

or if it's just the web interface you don't like, you could get outlook or thunderbird or whatever and imap to the account when you're on your computer

Client based email apps are where its at. So many things you cannot do with web-based email, like pgp or smime encryption/digital signitures.
