Default Android Phone with Call Recording Function

I would like to compile a list of Android phones that either...

1) Comes with native call recording functionality.
2) Support call recording with 3rd party applications.

It would be great if you can lend a hand.

Please note that phone/apps that require using speakerphone to record the calls do *not* count. That's a ugly hack I consider marginally useful.

Please don't bring legality discussions here as well.

Thanks.

Models that have this function built-in.
  • Meizu M9
  • Samsung Galaxy S (South Korean version SHW-M110S, with firmware DH09 or newer)

Models that don't have this function built-in but can use a 3rd party app/hack/ROM to record calls in both ways without turning on speakerphone.
Note: See this (http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=2117#c226) for a detailed explanation of this particular issue.

Update: Moving this thread to XDA since most hacks are discussed there and generally they're more "hackish" not suitable for this forum...

None of them come with that ability natively. What I've heard is that none of the call recorder apps in the market actually work well.

Only for Korean customers unfortunately...

I thought of buying a phone from Korea through Internet but apparently they will not work in UK...

So I am still stuck with my ageing Palm Treo 650

You can get a Galaxy S from many places, like eBay, and they should be usable on T-Mobile. The generic Galaxy S is available all over the world. Only in the US it's modded into 4 different versions.

I think the firmware is more or less the same for generic Galaxy S.

Who knows, maybe the Captivate, Epic, Fascinate and Vibrant will get this feature in a future firmware upgrade as well.

As I consider recording 2-way through the microphone an ugly hack, maybe I shouldn't post this... But heck, it's better than nothing...

A quick search finds that most of the major current smartphone OS, except Symbian, don't support call recording at all...

iPhone/iOS
Blackberry
webOS

Buyer beware.

I doubt legality is an issue because if otherwise, Google won't support this feature in Google Voice.

GVoice features and audible "This call is being recorded" type message when you record calls. In most states you are perfectly okay if you do that. In some states (like my own) you can legally record a call as long as you have the consent of one of the parties. So, if you call me, I can record your call without telling you I am recording your call and it's perfectly legal because I am a consenting party. In other states if you do this, it's illegal.

It seems that Nokia alone of all the major phone makers make phones will call recording functions in general.

Its the only company I have seen that does it.

As far as legality, which "we arent discussing", thats insane that that could even be an issue. If someone doesnt want to be answerable for what they say to another person – by that person, then they just shouldn't say it. This may just be my opinion, but I think its a perfectly fair one. People should grow up and be willing to bear the responsibility of only speaking according to things they are willing to stand by. Nonsense...

Someone(s) reported that he/she can record phone calls on (international) Galaxy S with a certain call recording app on market, without turning on the speakerphone. Doesn't work if Bluetooth is used, through.

There is a custom ROM for HTC Desire (My Brother is using it) (Sorry I dont know the name) but he says that can record calls both side without beep. So I think Custom ROMS can help us in this issue.

Both M9 and Galaxy S seem to use the same baseband processor and audio codec: Infineon 8824 and Wolfson WM8994.

Which is also used on Nexus S, BTW.

*not* regarding legal issues,

here in the UK most call centres record conversations for 'training purposes' but they have to give you notice either at the beginning of actual call or in a *disclaimer* in written contract/advertisement.

Wow those modified android dialiers (chinese and meizu versions) look killer. If there is no working call record app, is there at least a dialler app with a record button as shown in the above two pictures? And if anybody ever, ever, evaaar, finds out that a 100% working, working in all 3 talk modes (speakerphone, bluetooth headset, 3.5 mm headphone plugged into jack) of a Galaxy Tab GT-P1000, exists, then please please please let me know, i have tried everything on the market and nothing works.

My HTC Desire HD will record calls with the built in voice recorder that came with it. I have recorded several calls and it works for recording both sides with either the speaker on or off.

I'm sorry but it is forum policy that unlawful things shall not be discussed. I am also just trying to inform people of the possible repercussions of recording without notice in case they didnt know.

I am sorry everyone here does not have your abundant knowledge of US wiretapping laws and reprecussions of doing so illegally.

I am also sorry that you choose to respond in a manner that is reflecting upon you so poorly and hope you conduct yourself better in other areas of the forum. There was no need to curse at me for my response trying to give people a friendly heads up before the do something illegal and end up in legal trouble.

Please have a great weekend and perhaps you are just having a bad day.

^^ What Iowa said could have come from a moderator. I'm closing this thread, therefore, with a recommendation that we stay legal, as well as within forum policy which forbids illegal activity.
