Is it possible he sent you text in a different language than english?

I sometime text in spanish, and on certain phones they tell me they only received weird symbols, kinda like what you described.
I guess the phone doesn't know how to translate things like: ñ¿Äóú,. etc

I know what it is! lol I sent a message once from my ipod touch to my facebook, and it showed up as squares... the message I sent was emoticons from an app I downloaded. I found out later that the emoticons only work being sent between iphones, and ipods... so the ipod user probably doesnt even realize thier emoticons didnt work. my app was called Emoji.

It turns all the emoticons into squares... have no idea why. I just know that the app uses the Kanji keyboard that is installed on the ipod, so it might be because of that.

I think if the person's phone whom you send emoticons to also have installed the Emoji it will be fixed.
