What is with the android names. I don't know if this has been discussed but why is everything related to food?
Cupcake
Donut
Eclair
FroYo
Gingerbread
Honeycomb (Expected next)
I am not a fan of frozen yogurt but all the others are delicious. I read somewhere that they are in alphabetical order too.
Personally, I like it! I think it helps to remember and identify updates rather than numbers like 2.0.1 or 2.1 or 2.3.10 (Which happens to be the one I have.) It gives each step in the Android process an identity. Kinda like Windows 7. I saw the other day where I had the option to download a file for either Windows 7 or Mac OS 10.1.3 (Or something similar to that). And I remember thinking I like the reference of Windows 7 rather than Mac OS 10.1.3.45.34.678 Lol! Google is keeping it fun and interesting. And why would you expect it any other way. I mean just look at their name, Google. It's not, search engine.
I never realized the alphabetical order. Nice. I wonder what A and B were. Maybe that will be a trivia question or something along those lines in future years. Does anyone know by chance? And I'm guessing those were the two letters used during development before it hit the market.

Ubuntu Linux does the same thing with what they call their various releases. Besides giving it a name with the month and year of release. Usually April and October of each year they also use animal name designations.
Check out this wiki link for the names of the Ubuntu releases.
I just thought I would mention that Mac uses big cat names to go with their OS releases, the newest one that just came out is Lion & the one before was Snow Leopard.
I imagine that if they had a name for alpha, chances are good it would have been apple pie.

I think at some point Android may evolve past the code names. It seems that the longer this OS is around, it gets more and more polished, and the updates are more substantial X.X over X.X+1. I think by 4.0 there will be absolutely no reason for manufacturers to skin, and by 6.0 they might finally stop. Around those times I could see Android dropping allthe code names and number designations and just being Android, with periodical updates that only have numbers so you can tell them apart.
