Help with terminology

Saw elswhere...
My firmware: 2.2 FROYO
baseband: I897UCJJ4
build number: Cognition.v2..3b6

Can someone illuminate me as to what a "baseband" is in the context of Android ROMs.

Basically code for the cellular radio. I'm sure you could Google if you really want details.
