So how does one tell if a device has SIP support when one buys the phone other than user feedback from forums such as this? Any ideas?

it will be rolled out eventually to older devices but lots of people are already using it on the Nexus S.

A VoIP provider did some tests with the native gingerbread SIP client and there's still a lot to be desired.

You can download a VoIP app on your android device and it should do the same thing. I know Bria supports transfer and more business functions. Does this answer your question?
