Default Android Phones in 12 months time.....

We've seen an incredible rate of development over the last 2 years with these devices, what do you think the future holds?
I mean, I converted from Nokias and the Symbian platform and now I take many features for granted on my HTC Desire, things like

Touch Screen
Voice Commands
Scanners
Apps/Market culture
Unlimited ringtones
Email to phone simply
Social media
Youtube
Films
And probably many more...

I know some of these features were available a few years ago, but on an N86 it was hard work to get it set up and working reliably. Stuff "just works" on Android. It's awesome.

So where do we see it all going?

We have all heard about using our phones to pay, I'm looking forward to seeing how that pans out. Basically negating the need for credit cards and cash.... Interesting.
What about technology that recognises its user. The phone would only work if held by it's owner. It would certainly reduce phone related crime. Why steal a phone that wont work and is of no value to anyone else?

Can anyone think of anything else that would be cool? No matter how out there it may seem at the moment, who knows, it might be the norm in 2 years

Holographic projections anyone?

I forgot to mention SatNav. Pretty much standard now but back in the day, you'd have to fork out 100 quid for TomTom mobile and even then it wasn't supported by Nokia. It would work but if there was a problem, you were on yer own
Google maps/Nav/Tracker/etc is the dogs bollox and it's free these days

Well, we've got this now.. A "wow" ui - in 3D

Seriously though, I agree very much with your observations.. hand held devices are progressing rapidly and it seems that only the limits of the human imagination will slow things down some day in the future.

Perhaps we'll see a "John Edward Crossing Over" phone.

That SPB shell is brilliant

Why don't you get phones with a small built in thermometer? OK It wouldn't be the most accurate but it's a feature that you could sell or a small lighter on the side lol
What about a Breathalyser

Let the imagination run wild Don't worry about "actual" constraints. I know that a Lighter would be dangerous, a breathalyser too big etc etc but imagine if it was all possible, what would you want in your pocket?

I want a battery that lasts for a week even if I use my phone a lot.

The coolest thing ever would be a screen that could be changed on the go. Your screen could be, say, 3 inches normally, but you can stretch it to up to 10 inches. The phone would fit in your pocket easily, but when you want to read a book or browse an internet page, you could just make the screen physically bigger to make it more like a tablet. It would be even cooler if not only the size of the screen could be changed, but its shape, too. So the screen would be flat when it's in your pocket, but when you write something, the screen would change its shape so that it resembles a physical keyboard so you can feel the buttons with your fingers. This would make using the phone a lot easier and would have endless possibilities.

Sadly this is not possible... at least not yet.

With those apps you have to have the politician/clergyman/kid, etc speak into the phone. They all clam up as soon as I point my phone at them.

I need one that works in my pocket.

This whole post is a joke. Merry Christmas. lol

Hey, my lie detector just went off.

There must be some more fantasy features out there. This is what all handset manf. must do on their quest to find something unique to build into their next handset or Google must have loads of meetings to discuss this very topic so that they can develop the next novelty service.
Can you imagine the meeting a few years ago when someone suggested the concept of GPS!!

It'll be decades before science can develop one robust enough to handle politicians without immediately crashing.

Things I'd like to see:

Direct phone-to-phone connections. Something with longer range than bluetooth so you can use them as walkie-talkies in areas with no cell connectivity.

Expandable / pop-out screens like the timer device from "The One" (Go to the 4 minute mark to see it here)

Swiping to make purchases? How 2010! I want it to connect automatically so I can pay with a button press and upload the receipt (with all the products listed) to my phone. Except the phone is one my wrist and the size of a regular watch, and beams all visual info directly onto my eyeballs while reading my hand gestures in the air.

Button press? How 2010.

You want to do nothing using NFC, your hand gestures in the air reader was announced for Android by an Israeli software company 5 months ago, and pico projectors have been around for quite a while.

Why you want it all in single device rather a distributed system would be your affair, but here's your affordable watch for Android - today - Fossil Watch Connects to Android Phone [Wristwatch From Fossil Connects to Android Phone to Display Information. transform to a jet and fly me.......

how about a transplant for one of your back teeth.
it would be connect to your eyes.. and ears...
you can see the info in your field of vision..
hear anything ....

powered by the heat of your body... which will help you loose weight.

it would be put in as you loose your baby teeth...
as you develop into adulthood...
help fix flaws in your DNA.... so our bodies will be stronger... live longer

since it is able to put images into your eyes...
it can easily add a few some pix on the outside of your eyes.. this will help to change the color of your eyes.. in nano sec.

FWIW the biggest upgrade I would want YESTERDAY is longer battery life. I am talking a phone that lasts at least a week.

One can dream, right?

battery technology hasn't really advanced that much since phone batteries came out, they have a bit, but it's been everything evolving around them. yesterday there were long battery lives, I had a Nokia that lasted days and days and days

In Japan, they are doing 3D now on their local market, yes, Android smartphones.

Maybe we can see that happen on the other side of the pond.

A touchscreen that's as thin as a piece of paper and can be rolled up to fit in your pocket.

Of all the technology I want, I want long battery life. For years I owned dumbphones and they could stay on standby for over a week with hardly using up energy. I could go for a larger screen but thinner case. Maybe I'm asking too much at this point in time.
