They dont like authorising firmware. Ask any nokia user!
I'm on 1.5 and with Orange...Prob a stoopid question to ask but why does it matter if Orange don't authorise this release, surely there will be a way to update my phone anyway?

There is. But you risk any warranty you have with Orange by removing the Orange branding.
Plus if you have Orange care insurance, they have been known to refuse insurance claims where 'non approved software updates' have been used.
There was a run of Nokia owners complaining on the official Nokia forums a year or so back at Orange and Nokia not honouring warranties where people had changed the product code so the got the 1st released generic updates.
carriers have to pay to have the updates added to their network, as well as the testing the carriers need to do, it's an expensive proposition for them. Multiply that by more than one android handset, you have a headache for the carrier that they really don't want.
HTC, or any other handset manufacturer, has to be asked by the carrier for the update, the carriers are actually the customers of the device manufacturer and they make the updates specific to the carriers desires. Thats where the crapware comes in..
So even tho it may behoove the carrier to buy these updates and invest the monies, it's a gamble as to what they will do as they weigh the cost benefit of doing so. They may piss of customers in the long run by not updating the software as it comes out, but they already have you in a contract. This will work for carriers for awhile untill the public gets tired of it, eventually.
i figured more phones have 1.5 then anything else. What phones even run 1.6? Must suck to be them, stuck between Sense and 2.0.
I thought the same, in fact I thought that about 70-80% of users would have 1.5 with the remainder being rooted phones and Nexus users. Must be some pretty popular phones running 1.6 - just can't think what it might be (unless its another load of rooted phones, in which case there are a tonnes more people doing that than I would have suspected)
Edit: *googles* G1 is one of them apparently which might explain it.

Something really concerning is that google is doing nothing to give us all costumers firmware update, specially forgetting people in latin america that is buying their phones!
Google already made the update, it isn't up to them to get it working on your phone.
I read an article a couple of weeks ago that refered to the Hero upgrade as 2.0.1. Of course I didn't save the article and can't remember where I read it. If I find it I will provide a link.
hurry up moto 2.0 is substantial update and they are still releasing new phones with old soft, not the way to take over the market. Notice how other companies release ihardware with new software updates...
My Galaxy Spica i5700 is also still running 1.5
None of the 2.0-2.1(beta)'s were as stable as the 1.5
I'm waiting desperately for the official 2.1 release.
Just looked on my dext and that is still on 1.5 which means I can't have google earth on my phone as that needs 2.1(I think)
Correct!!! I just got the Cliq XT, and stuck w/ 1.5. At this point I wouldn't care if I only got a 1.6 update. It would be better than 1.5. Then maybe I can actually use most of the apps in the market.

3 as far as I know. The Cliq, the cliq xt, and the Behold 2. I think that's it. Any they're all t-mobile devices as you can see witch kind of pisses me off since I had the G1 on the day it was released and have about 4 different android phones. I have the Cliq XT now and it love it, 1.5 or not. I think this phone will be nothing short of amazing with 2.1 and flash 10. I hope we get them both. I'm %99 sure we'll get the 2.1 but only about %50 that this device will get Flash 10, although it comes with Flash lite, witch is better than no flash at all. Hopefully the flash will upgrade along with the Android 2.1 os. <<Crosses fingers>>>>

I own a Galaxy I7500L (same as the I7500, but in Brazil or Canada). It's still stuck on 1.5, and no one knows if it'll even receive an official upgrade to 1.6, let alone 2.x. A 1.6 update is available if you flash it to your phone, but if you only want official stuff, you're pretty much screwed.
Still limping along with 1.5 on my T-Mobile Cliq. Talk about being left in the dust. Considering Sprints EVO 4G if I'm still crippled when this releases.

No need to worry. The Cliq and Cliq XT are due for the 2.1 update in Q2. Hang in there.
With regards to the EVO, though, I think I'm still going to get it. Lol. I guess I love phones so much I'm willing to have 2 carriers .
I'm on of those new 1.5 users. I just got my Galaxy Spica with Rogers the other day. I've been seaching and calling all over trying to figure out how to get atleast 1.6 since I need it for Google Maps 4.1. I ticks me off that I can't save locations with the GPS function. Looks like I should be able to get all my up to date info off this forum!
A new Android 1.5 user (T-Mobile G2Touch AkA HTC Hero), awaiting a Android 2.1 update, which should hit very soon... I suspect that pie-chart will change very quickly once HTC start updating the Hero....
I suspect the rapid expansion of the Android 1.5 devices, is with mobile providers clearing down the shelves for the next-gen android handsets. I was lured in by the £10/Month T-Mobile HTC Hero deal (£10 for unlimited data, a bolt-on of my choice, from either unlimited landline, unlimited texts, or unlimited T-Mobile calls plus 100 minutes and 100 texts a month and the HTC hero was £62 - which is a TOTALLY INSANE DEAL )

i'm pretty sure that's the end of december + start of january, not march
it's the usa's idiotic scheme of putting the month before the day; ie. 1/4/2010 as opposed to 4.1.2010 (the 4th of january was the first business day of the year)
also, if it was the end of march, there'd be some 2.1 devices as well

Why ya gotta hate? It's just different.
In the US we write 4/1/2010 because we say April 1st, 2010. In Europe they write 1/4/2010 because you say 1st of April, 2010.
In some countries they would write that as 2010/4/1. Descending order makes it easiest to sort. It's just different, not idiotic.

the descending order does make sense, but the usa way is neither ascending nor descending from a chronological perspective, which is why i think it's idiotic
