Is this a virus? Unknown adds after making a phone call
Hi there,
I had fun installing some free applications today...until I realized that now after every single time I make a phone call I have an add bar at the bottom of my screen for about 7 seconds before I can make another phone call. It locks me out from hitting re-dial or anything related to dialing. I can press the back or home button and it will let me out of the add. However, I do not know which program this add is coming from. I have literally deleted every application I downloaded today and it is still there.
Can anyone please help me? It scares me that I cannot make a phone call immediately due to this unknown source of adds.
Secure didn't find anything. But it says I have a backup stored from 20 hour ago. Could I use that? I don't know how to do that. Also I looked throigh my SD card and there are folders still there but they are empty. When I tried to erase them they said they couldn't be erased. This was go launcher and go contacts.
It is so weird how the ads lock up m screen for the 5-7 seconds. Now there aren't any streaming ads....itis just a blank black box that says: free app sponsored by: and then it has the seconds counting down. The first two times I did see ads but they were having difficulty loading....so they were jumpy.
Thanks for your replies...I can't wait to get my healthy Android back.
I got all of my applications from android google market. I installed the go dialer, go contacts, go contact widget, go weather, go weather widget, go launcher ex, sush! ringer restorer and volume control +. But I have since uninstalled all of them. I took out my battery and it is still showing me the add after I make a call.
Is it possible to use my secure app and use the back up from approximately 20 hours ago? I'm not sure how this works. I really don't want to do a factory reset...as my phone is rooted.
I'm sorry guys, I was referring to "lookout" when I wrote "secure". I have a backup from lookout from about 20 hours ago. Should I use this and how would I do that?
I just noticed something else. After I make a call and the ad bar comes up, it causes my "sync" icon to come up at the top of my phone. It also slightly dims my screen when the ad bar at the bottom pops up. In my opinion it dims my screen to show me that no matter where I push on my dialer it wont let me until the 7 seconds are up. However, as I noted above, I can push the "home" or "back" button to exit the dialer application and I don't have to finish waiting out the 7 seconds.
I decided to erase my apps in groups and see if it gets rid of it. Of course, not until I get to t-y do I find the cause of all of this. Here are the apps that I deleted which one of them was the cause of all of this:
1. the weather channel
2. translate
3. trapball
4. tv guide mobile
5. unified remote
6. wordsearch
7. yelp
8. and possibly: talking caller id (free) I can't remember if this was in this batch or not
Thank you to everyone for trying to help me. If anyone knows anything about any ads for these programs that would have done this to me, please let me and the world know!
Freedom alas! Yay for the encouragement from the forums!

Try installing them one by one and see if the problem comes back.
If it does, you've found your culprit. Maybe we can help you from there, or maybe you can just live without the app (there could be hardware/software conflicts that can't be helped).
If it doesn't, then-- problem solved! Chalk it up as a fluke and move on (unless it happens again)

I reinstalled talking caller id (free), tv guide mobile and yelp and I am still not having any problems. Knewz...I will give that app a try. thanks for the referral!
I decided not to re-install unified remote because this was one of the new ones I installed and I am most suspicious about this one. I really don't want to have this happen all over again.

I too had the same problem, couldn't find an answer anywhere, however I just read your post, saw the Apps listed and worked it through power of elimination. The only app I had on my phone which was in common to you was 'talking caller ID (free)', I just uninstalled and the problem has gone. So there is your culprit!

Also for future reference, try an app by lookout called Ad Network, that will tell which apps have advertising and the ones that use certain features on your phone, you could also download LBE privacy, everything you install a app, it will ask you for permission on what that apps wants to do, great little feature

I was using Go SMS since I couldn't send an MMS after the ICS update. (It worked on GB - so not carrier) I started getting push text messages, started hunting, and found the box to allow push texts checked in Go SMS. Unchecked box, all good until last update. Allow push texts checked again.
Chomp (purchased) is working again since rerooting phone and installing CM7. Go will be uninstalled.
Any free app is likely to have nasty barnacles hanging off the side, even ones from the market. Before installing them, it’s best to check permissions and read the user comments.
In my experience, I have never seen a virus on my droid, but have seen plenty of freeware barnacles that do stuff just like what he’s describing. So my guess is that an AV won’t find a virus, because technically there isn’t one, just some crap that acts like a virus and was unintentionally requested.

I have been using all of the go apps for almost 2 years now with no problems, I have never seen adds because of Go apps. I use Go launcher, weather, widgets, contacts, dialer, sms.....
