I followed your instructions, and it just didn't work for me. Though, to be honest, I am new on this phone (just got it yesterday) and am muddling through it.

what if my previous manual update file is named update.zip? should i change the name on the rc30 update? and then rename the rc33 to update.zip?

nm i answered my own question and thats exactly what i did. i had to rename my old update to something else. i chose update30.zip on my sd card. everything went fine. thanks for the link. im on RC33!!!
awesome one you get the update go to my downloads then notifications and it will tell u if your apps have an update pending. way cool. and the google voice recognition is pretty awesome. another cool thing is when you are at your home screen, highlight an app with a long name with the trackball and it scrolls the name across. i dont remember the phone doing that b4. unless im just a ******. but cant someone else verify it didnt happen b4 the update?

at this time you there is no rooted version. if you are currently rooted you have to re-install rc29 then update to rc30 the update to rc33. no root. but if you want root, give it time. it should be here shortly.
Thanks. I can confirm that the scrolling of long app names is new in RC33. I tested before updating.
Sadly, Voice Search is not yet working in my market. When I click the microphone icon on the search widget I see an immediate, "Connection problem" dialog box. Slave1, it's just a hunch, but a similar reason may be why this update isn't encouraged for the UK. I suspect TMO in my area hasn't updated something.

Okay I am new to android as well. Are we going on the web site via PC and downloading the rc33 to our SD cards from the USB connection or do we go straight to the website though our G1's. Please elaborate for the FNG. Thanks.

Update will be OTA ...so be patient as they roll it out in waves ...
I am in Washington DC ... and not here yet for me..
Worked like a charm. I don't remember all the little animations during install when it went from rc29 to rc30. Was that from manually installing this time?
i just installed now manualy those instructions up top are perfect but you must have root access. check out the new themes for it too. your old ones wont work dont try theres a couple for the rc33 update xda-devolpers. has all you will ever need!!!!!!!

Thanks Hombre. I'll be patient. But I've been reading the forum long before I bought the phone and I saw how everone was waiting for the legendary "Cupcake" OTA upgrade and I see how that went. But I am more confident about the RC33. Does anyone who did the manual update see if the market was update to Paid Apps. That was floating around rumorville for RC33.
Worked great for me as well. Thanks for the post. Im not a very patient man. I didnt see any "pay" apps on the market so i dont beleive that rumor is true. Now all we need is root access for RC33 - where are you JesusFreak?

for those of you getting the can't find file error
"Windows usually hides the .zip, so if you renamed it update.zip that means windows might have really made it update.zip.zip
Just name it update, if it still shows the zip file icon then this is what you want. I have my computer show me all extensions, this eliminates this problem." I think this is why some people feel its only working with certain sd cards.
I grabbed this from another website regarding updates but i don't have the guy's name that figured it out. thanks to him for realizing this though, whoever you are!

i tried it with update.zip and just update. its giving me an error saying "E:cant open cache/recovery/command" also says no such file or directory. Installation aborted. what am i doing wrong?? i downloaded the file (signed-PLAT-RC33-from-RC30.f06aa9b3) and renamed it to update.zip and dragged it onto the sd. is this correct. any help would be much appreciated. thanks!
Worked well for me also.
One thing to note just so no one is caught off guard...(although i'm sure everyone would figure it out)
8)press menu+L to see the script running
9)When the update is finished press home+back to reboot
10)On reboot you'll see an icon of a eprom with a big rounded yellow arrow
11) phone will reboot on its own
12) reboot might take longer than normal.

arggg.... what am i doing wrong the phone doesnt have to be unlocked or anything right? i got mine direct from tmo.
I didnt have to press any buttons after the Alt-S to start it.
Also, the final reboot, where the Android dude flashes, it takes a long time. Took like 4 minutes or so. Don't fret and turn it off. Just let it go. Eventually it should just be booted up.
I think this was part of my problem. I was using the dev firmware. I hit Alt-L before Alt-S so I could see the output of the upgrade attempt. It told me that the signature of the update was invalid. No idea what I can do about that.
Followed instructions and it worked fine the first time.
That final reboot before you can use the phone again does take a looooooong time though. I was just starting to think something had gone horribly awry, but no. Just be patient.
Followed all instructions - phone is not root - verified through file manager on the phone that the name is correct at update.zip
Downloaded the file again ... seeing now that the file is 0 bytes - seeing also that someone else had to use a download manager in order to get the file to DL correctly.
Going that route and will report back
(make sure you update.zip file is not 0 bytes?)
Using Win7 + FF3 - may tray to DL in IE ...
EDIT:
I'm seeing now that when DLing the file from media fire the file is getting some of the way and then just completing (some times at 0 bytes sometime at 3 or 8 megs) this is the issue ... Looks like a DL Manager is needed?
umm ok after the download and the phone restarting 2 or 3 times, it finally turned back on but what am i going to do now? I mean nothing else happened! My phone looks and acts just like it was before...can anyone help pls??
Im from Australia and i have no idea on what or how i can update my g1. Do i have to wait for an australian version to come out? Or is there a way i can tell if this update will work for my phone? Is this for the R33?
When i do dl it and try to put it on my phone it says something about not recognising it and then it just asks me to reebot. Any help would be awsome thanks
