Advertisement Notifications

Okay, so I may just be dense. I've had my phone a little over a week, and I get daily spam in my notification area and I hate it. The icon is a little star, and it keeps trying to get me to boost my battery, find local singles (I'm married), or change my voice. o.O

I've got an HTC Inspire, and I've looked everywhere I can think of to turn the blasted thing off. Anyone know more than I do?

Chances are you've installed some sort of application that is ad-supported, and they've somehow managed to get ads to show up in the notification area. I'd suggest removing installed applications one at a time and see which one makes these ads stop. Once you find that application, I'd also recommend leaving it uninstalled. Ads in the notification area seems pretty sketchy.

I agree, this advice sounds like your best option to start with. But your right all the time I've been on android. I have never experienced adds in the notification bar. Sounds very dodgy. Take care

I have seen a youtube video from an advertisement company about those notification ads. Try looking at the comments in the market of any free apps you downloaded. Any app that uses this abhorrent form of advertising is bound to have a ton of bad comments complaining about it.

The video states that users can opt out, I would look into that. I refuse to use any apps that use push notification advertising.... I'll deal with the ads in the apps.

I like that they've disabled comments and ratings on their youtube video. Guess they don't want people pointing out their spammers. And it looks like the only way to opt out is to install an app from Airpush. O.o There needs to be a better way to block the spam other than getting an ap from the spammer.

This REALLY ticks me off. I would boycott any developer who uses this technology in their apps.

I agree completely. I mean I'll happily pay for good apps, and even sometimes click on ads in the apps to support developers (if I come across an interesting ad).... but I will absolutely not deal with this stuff in my notification bar. I don't care how good the app is, its a snap uninstall if I see stuff like this.

Just found AirPush Detector by Dan Bjorge for free on the market. Not connected to AirPush and it showed me the app that's using it--totally not the one I was thinking it would be!

I would make this technology mandatory ... for every telemarketer who calls me during dinner.

What app was it? So I know to stay away from it.

I think that the culprit was Battery Pro or Battery Boost Pro. I installed that anti-airpush app (awesome stuff, BTW), and have confirmed that I have no AirPush apps. And no annoying spam notifications! But I can't find the battery app on the market anymore to confirm that it's definitely the problem.....

Here's an unexpected bonus for you. While I was getting the notifications, I was having fits with my battery life. I was lucky to get a day's of use out of it before it went dead. Yesterday, I went to bed with 40% left, and today looks even more promising!

That makes sense. I would imagine that Air Push would have a background service running, constantly monitoring internet connectivity and then pushing ads to you. It would have a detrimental effect on battery life.

That is another huge negative on why I would NEVER use AirPush. Ever.

Thanks for this! I noticed I had been receiving spam notifications and this found the program. Some mp3 downloader.. Spam icon instantly gone!
