I was thinking since we have GPRS and you have EDGE, and we have more wifi channels than you there's bound to be some problems.. But has any one done it yet? and at what 'cost'?

ive gone from UK RC9 JF 1.43 to US RC33 JF 1.42 and havent had any problems, if anything its added features that uk firmware doesnt have like the voice dialing/search and amazon mp3, wifi and edge work fine. only thing that doesnt work is the IM clients apart from gchat as it just gets the error "unable to get phone number from sim"

That is because the "other" IM clients (i.e. not google talk) use SMS to send and receive messages, your SIM is not a US SIM and therefore the number can not be read as a US number, that is why the IM client complains. Good job really, as most of us UK people havent got unlimited text allowances.
