I just got a new Galaxy S2 (had iPhone before) and i have no idea how notifications work on this thing. After a lot of searching all I've come up with is that basically all apps poll the servers at certain time intervals. and that kills my battery. The only app that actually receives notifications (and I don't think it polls is google+). The samsung galaxy email app works well but the polling makes my battery go to crap. and other apps like Facebook, words/hanging with friends don't get notifications at all, no matter how often i set it to check. what gives? can anybody give me some info/ advice on this? thanks

Definitely not all apps do this.

What kind of email account do you have? If you only have a gmail, use the gmail app, which uses Push notifications, no battery loss at all. If you have something other than a gmail, consider setting that account to forward all emails to your gmail, that way you will get the emails instantly and wont use as much battery.

As far as other apps, just make sure every time you install an app, you go to the settings, and see what kind of polling/checking it does. If you dont need it to be immediate, turn it to manual.

Also go to settings-accounts and sync, and turn off anything you dont need. Most android phones automatically sync news and stocks every hour, even though most people dont use either of those.
