Default Gmail, market, etc. blocked in China?

Hi

Recently (in China) my HTC Desire no longer syncs my gmail account or connects to the market over mobile internet (China mobile) or WiFi (unless using VPN).

It seems I am not the only one:

China Mobile is blocking Gmail. or China is I can't tell. - Google Mobile Help

I'm used to google docs, twitter, FB etc. being blocked but have never had an issue with syncing gmail on my phone.

Anyone have any ideas how to get around this? If I could get VPN working over my mobile internet that may help but have not found any way to do this.

Thanks

Is there any way you could get mail delivered to your gmail account forwarded to another account, then configure the app on your handset to receive via the 2nd account?

Regarding the market, does a 3rd party site like appbrain work?

That site only seems accessible through the phone. Here is a bit more:
Google: Android.com market back up in China | Digital Media - CNET News

Not much detail of what went wrong but it seems to be working again. N.B. it wasn't just the market but the gmail, calender, etc. However they seem to be deeply linked.
