But you can infect your own phone by making the choice to install a malicious app.

I don't install apps or anything for that matter through the browser in my phone. I always use Android Market for apps.

Many apps requires permissions that i would consider "possible spyware"
Social apps like facebook is one of them who requires some serious permissions, but is considered a social service that everyone use.
Don't know if Iphone would be a safer choice since all apps are checked?

iPhone / Safari had vulnerabilities, which were patched.

I would be more concerned about using free public wifi, unencrypted.

The best thing to do if you arent sure, download an app that has over 1000 reviews and has at least a 3.5 star rating. And check the permissions against the features of the app. For example, a flashlight app shouldnt have internet permissions unless it has ads.

In an effort to keep things safe, I only allow downloads from the Market, where it seems things are tested first. They might be overly snoopy or use excessive memory, but they’re otherwise harmless... I assume.

I think it's impossible, most of Viruses are made for windows system, and android is build base on Linux, so the virus can nor run in your mobile phone.

Honestly, Facebook should be a bigger concern for privacy advocates than the Android OS. Especially seeing how they don't let you delete your profile. You can lock it up so anyone except the Facebook staff and the government can see your profile. But that's not the same thing.

The recent HTC spyware thing being the only exception I can think of at the moment. But that's not a Google thing. That's an HTC thing. I might just have to vote with my dollars the next time I'm up for a new device.
