Hey guys, I'm new to android and learning my way up as i go.. But what is rooting and what all does rooting do? Sorry for the dumb question haha.. BTW.. I have the HTC Vivid.

Rooting is obtaining super admin rights on your phone. You can then do cool things like do a full back up of your phone, do screenshots, have free wifi tether, etc.

Simple answer, rooting allows you to have superuser access to your device. If you are more familiar with windows then it is like having admin access. You can delete whatever you want from the phone (which can cause issues if you decide you want to delete something important). It also brings up the possibility to run custom roms if there is a dev community for your device.

Because your phone is so new there isn't too much on the root front currently but if this interests you keep an eye on Vivid - All Things Root - Android Forums to see when devs start to find root methods and any custom rom development
