Hey, first off ill apologise if this is in the wrong area, or if there has been a thread before (i tried searching but i didnt find much help)
i am looking to get my first smartphone and after much factoring i came down to two that i can afford (used, i just cannot sport a new phone cost right now) the HTC Hero or the Mytouch3g (or magic)
they both look good, and all teh reviews ive read point to the hero as the better phone, but the reviews dont give me to much info, they mostly talk about twitter and facebook, cameras e-mail and calender syncing, and weather. the thing is, none of that really matters a whole lot to me. i do want to surf teh web, but as farf as other things go, im far more likly to use this thing as a soft gaming device. i know its not but its what ill do.
it will play mp3's and if it can handle it videos it will make calls go to websites and other smartphone things.
idealy i want to know which has better video quality, which supports flash better, which is quicker, which can handle more media apps, which can handle games better, and which has the better phone feature.
if theres a better phone let me know, but i only have about 300 bucks to spend (of which i can get both of these used off ebay) but not much more. i want to keep it windows and im not at all open to apple, i dislike the rent your phone service they offer.
I may be a little biased (owning a hero myself), but I think the Hero is a better choice. The cameras on both are fairly poor, but the Hero's is better at 5mpx vs 3mpx. The Hero also has more RAM at 256mb to 192mb, but they will both be updated to android 2.1 in the spring.
To be honest there is so little between the devices, I would go with the Hero because it does have slightly better hardware. Software wise, they run the same version of Android, but the Hero has the "Sense" overlay, which some would say is a selling point, some would say is a curse. It has some great features, but some believe it is a little bloated. I would play with one before you make your decision, but I would say for what you want, the hero is the way to go.
I assume where you said "I want to keep it windows" I presume that's not what you meant, otherwise your in the wrong website
EDIT: It's also worth noting that if you want to listen to music, the myTouch 3G probably won't have a 3.5mm headphone jack (it has only just been updated with it, so it is unlikely any eBay models will have it)

no, i want nothing to do with windows on my phone any more then i want apple, they can stay on computers and have fun there.
as for the headphone jack, i dont like headphones so at best id use it to put better speakers on my phone, but bringing it up, how is the speaker for music?
i did read that it has HTC sense, but i didnt learn much about it, only that its suposedbly the best gift to man, and its also multi-touch, but i also read that is has inferior video and is a bit more sluggish, is that true?
also is their a diffrence between the squareish hero and the rounded one?

I'm gonna keep this short. Personally, I feel the HTC is a better phone. Physically, I prefer the My Touch to the Hero. But I prefer the HTC interface. And I just like the phone. On top of that, Sprint has a little bit better coverage nationwide and a vastly better/faster data network. The cost is going to be relatively similar, you will get less minutes with Sprint but with the Everything Data plan that you will probably end up on, you will have Any Mobile Anytime which is free calling to ANY mobile phone on ANY network. For me that would equate to almost unlimited minutes because I almost never talk to anyone on landlines, and if so it's rarely a long call.
the new mytouch version 1.2 is a way better phone than its original.. plus tmobile is alot cheaper monthly than sprint. well not alot cheaper but cheaper overall. ultimately goto the stores and look at the phones and try them out yourself. we can advise all we want but you need to see what you like
i am already a t-mobile customer and i wont be switching, if i get a hero i will be unlocking it to use with my service. so that was never an issue. the store phones dont really have anything on the phones to really test out anything, and none of them are connected to the net no sims or anything so i dont actually have a way to really test out either phone.
I would say the mytouch 3G, but only the newer release (which will be a bit more). It upgrades the memory from 128 to 288mb. Unlocking the Hero will work if you don't mind EDGE vs 3G service (not sure it has AWS)

so the hero doesnt have 3G? and would the new mytouch be better then hero overall?

and whats the overall diffrence in 3g from edge?
The Hero has 3G, but only on the Sprint network. Sprint's network is CDMA, and T-Mobile's is GSM, so you wouldn't receive 3G with a Hero on T-Mobile's network.

is edge slow enough to be a deciding factor? or does the phone make up fo rit otherwise?

OP: Both support 3G on their networks, but Sprint's isn't a world phone (so won't work on GSM) and the Europe version doesn't support the same 3G frequencies as T-mobile's network. To the question of EDGE vs 3G, I wouldn't get a phone without 3G on T-mobile.

How is T-Mobile less per month than Sprint? A friend of mine switched from T-Mobile to Sprint to get better 3G service and to save money. With Sprint he is paying $69.99 for 450 min (w/mobile to mobile which turns the 450 minutes into 1000min+), and unlimited data, messaging etc. With T-Mobile he was paying $39.99 for 500 min, plus $30 for data, plus $10 for messaging = total $79.99.
rivercat, T-mobile is cheaper. For $59.99 they offer 500 minutes, with unlimited text/web ($10 less and 50 minutes more), or $79.99 for unlimited everything vs Sprint's $99.99 unlimited everything plan. Unsupported Browser (Add $20 for contract prices - but I prefer non-contract and Sprint doesn't seem to offer that to compare)
yeah i will be upgrading from a contract to a famliy month by month plan.
so without 3g its looking like the mytouch is the better phone. but the new mytouch will cost to much and the old one doesnt have multi-touh (which looks like it will hurt entertainment such as games or modding)

I wasn't aware of the non contract pricing. For me Sprint works out better with the free mobile to mobile and I also get a 20% discount each month.
ok so looking up some infor on the edge vs 3g front, i started looking into the mytouch 1.2 the only thing im unsure of is where to buy it. on tmobiles site they have a new mytouch listed for 400 bucks (a bit over my price range, but if it comes with multi touch screen then i may make the strech) is that the new version?
also, its prob going to take me a month or two to save up a hundred extra bucks nail the 400 mark, is there any other phone that would hands down beat the mytouch 1.2 in that price range out now or exspected to be out soon?
The nexus 1 run on t-mobile . But if you want a badass phone and your with t-mobile then that's the one..
well i absolutly hate how much this phone costs, and i really did not want to spend 500 bucks on a phone, but i also dont want something outdated quickly, id like to have something that will stay powerful enough that i dont have to upgrade every other day. the price diffrence really isnt much between this and they mytouch 2, so unless theres something i should know i cant find any argument there.
any info on this being multi-touch, and i think its safe to assume it wont have the 3g problems i was facing with hero (since its a all for all phone)
any more imput on this new mytouch vs nexus one thread??

you can go to the nexus 1 forum and search around, someone there tell you how to get the nexus for $179.
yeah i can get a good deal if i choose to give myself a new contract, but thats not my aim, im upgrading to a family plan on a month to month basis, from my curretn two year contract with fav 5. with the month to month it works out that my sister (currently on Metro PCS) and me would both save a huge amount of money (actually i think i even out or even pay a little more cause ill go with an unlimited data upgrade for my phone) there fore i have to buy the phone outright.

MyTouch (32B) 2.2.1 FRG83D

I believe the mytouch has multitouch capable hardware, but won't have any apps (3rd party or Google) or SDK support until it receives a 2.x OS update. The new version of the mytouch with extra memory is expected to receive such an update in the next few months but only the Fender Edition has been confirmed by T-Mobile (the Fender edition and the MyTouch + 3.5 mm jack are the same hardware though so it seems a no-brainer).
Sprint offers the most cost effective plans to date... Verizon the best coverage and that includes it's 3g. Both offer time to use the phone and decide if you want to keep it. This is the route to take and get the experience first hand if you are a first time Smartphone user. I would highly suggest doing it this way, you can read and ask all you want about the two phones and get 5,000 different opinions. There is no substitute for having it IN HAND, feeling it, seeing if it does all you want, etc. If you go this route the worst you are out a few bucks for airtime usage... Make sure you talk to the carriers and KNOW the limits, how many days, etc. for backing out of contract.
