I had that happen with an aftermarket extended life battery.
Part of it is that the battery meter on most of the devices I have used aren't always that accurate, especially when it has been up and running for awhile. Especially with aftermarket batteries the devices usually overestimate remaining power.
At least that has been my experience. I saw similar things on my Epic with the OEM battery, though to a lesser degree.
