Good battery life - depending what you came from (say a feature phone), you cant have that battery life anymore. With ANY android phone, expect charging everyday. Also it depends on how you use your phone.

Typing messages - I use a qwerty keyboard, and I find the Ray a bit narrow. I'd prefer a wider screen like on the Galaxy.

Surfing the web - bigger screen = better

small and handy phone - Ray is smaller and handier, and the smaller screen provides better battery life, but its screen is a bit small for comfortable typing of messages or surfing the web.

Your choice.
