Default Is big brother watching?

Hi

Im a bit of a noob round these parts, i have a eepad and not really sure if this as eepad specific or android but when you connect to the internet what information can be obtained by people? I read an article in the paper that you can be tracked by your serial number or other unique identifier (mine is not a 3g version so has no IMEI) so either big brother or Google knows where you are and what you are doing. Is this true? Can you mask this information if it is?

Im loving android though ive just sold my Desire HD and waiting for a Sensation XE to come the first one i had developed that touch screen problem.

Yes they are.....if someone wants to find you or get your info they will. its not something the typical user like myself could do, but I know people who can.

for instance, when you visit a web site, it tracks your IP address and that will link you to a location, finding that location can be done by the IP address as the ISP's know what IP is assigned to which modem.
When I view the stats for my web site I get a break down of the user's country, IP address, web browser, OS type and ISP provider and several other bits of info.

if you want to mask your location you can do it, but someone else with better networking knowledge than I have will have to chime in, or just search for masking IP on the web

I know that if i go through my web site stats i just get IP addresss but it doesnt tell me where that IP is or what device it was using. I get get how many people from X visited my site or how many Chrome users etc. Also an IP is one thing but what about the specific device information like mac addres or serial number does that stop at the fire wall or are they logged as well?

If these things can be tracked via just the serial number as they are unique to each device then why cant the Police just search for stolen items using a serial number? I know that you can track an IMEI as long as the battery is in even if its turned off. But that is done through the GSM network.

Nope paid through the teeth for mine from PC World UK

Its just after reading this article in a UK newspaper and after reading that Google and HTC have recently been criticised for capturing key logs i wonder how far it can and will go and at what point is this "protection" going to interfere with right to privacy.
