Default droid talk&text&wifi w/o paying data plan?

Hi. I have recently lost my verizon Intensity II. I was almost a year through my two year contract. I am part of my family plan of 700min talk and unlimited text &picture messaging.
So my friend gave me his old verizon android to use. Is there a way I can reactivate my line and not have to change my plan to the extra $30 data plan? That would be kind of outrageous for me. I am a full time college student.. and I'm always there.. and I have access to their wifi.

I just want to talk, text, picture message, &use the wifi that i always have access too.

If you have any suggestions for my dilemma please let me know! thanks[:

Welcome to AF

Verizon requires a 2 GB or higher data plan with any smartphone. You will be unable to activate the phone without one.

It doesn't make sense to me how a carrier who didn't sell you a phone can tell you how to use it, and how on earth that is legal. This is not allowed in Canada, surprisingly. I would be pretty outraged as a phone manufacturer because this would cut into my sales.
