Exclamation How to force wifi SMS instead of 4g?

Hi folks, nice to meet you.
And yes... before I get snarked at I searched first, I just hit a bit of a wall and need better help at this point.

I have a new smartphone, Samsung Galaxy S2 X, it's my first one and as such I'm in that beginning part of the learning curve.

I was having a problem both sending and recieving images from/to my wife's iphone 4S. Turned out that it was because I was using my home wifi connection and the basic SMS application will only send image files if you're connected to the 4G network.

Which I pay through the nose for, and which sounds like a crappy old cash-grab to me.

Is there any way to force the use of my wifi connection for sending images via SMS instead of having to rely exclusively upon my 4g...?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Mike.

Welcome to the forums!

Go ahead and review our site guidelines - we don't tolerate snark over nonsense like searching, so you've got no worries here.

SMS/MMS policies vary by carrier and phone. Not sure if another app can help with that, but maybe Handcent is worth a try anyway. Hopefully, others can provide a more complete answer.

Which carrier are you on?

To my knowledge sms does not use data, it uses the texting plan, mms does use data.

pool_shark is correct that SMS is old-skool 2G tech. However if you send an image via SMS it has to be converted to an M(ultimedia)MS, which is a data service. Afaik there's no way that can operate over wifi, unfortunately.

Hi there, 4G is your mobile data and cell connection, wifi is an internet connection. There is NO way you can send or receive sms/mms over wifi. You can only do this via your cellular service. you could use an alternative method, like bluetooth for local transfers, or there are a few other services that work similar to your sms/mms service but run over the internet, you would normally have to pay a subscription for these services too but it might work out cheaper for you than paying your provider. You can certainly txt for free if you both use an app like skebby, freetxt, textplus etc.. not sure about mms.

Hi

Just a slight correction to above....s(hort)ms can be sent via wifi using services like viber, Skype etc. Whether you pay for sending or not depends on the service provides and whether the recipient is using the same service e.g viber to viber.

Multimedia messages use a different system and, as already said, require a data plan.

It's such a con the mms charges. I have a 500mb data allowance and when I send an mms the charge me 40p when in reality they should just use my data allowance.

Anyways, to the OP, if you're just sending mms's to people you know who have android, iPhone or blackberry then you and they should install liveprofile, ping, or whatsapp. You can send images as well as text via wifi with these apps.

There is this other technology, brand new so none of you would of heard of it before, its called- e-mail, works over any internet connection and you can send text and images :+P

sorry, but in all seriousness, if you have your gmail account linked to your phone which I assume everyone would then email for messaging and image sharing would be sufficient wouldn't it?

Ok.
Excellent information from everyone and all of it supplied quickly and in a newb-friendly style, you folks just got my vote for being a great bunch of people.

I'm on Telus, situated in Canada.

Thanks to the quick tune-up concerning the difference between 4G and Wifi as well as that link over to the Motorola forum I think I'm getting a handle on just what's going on here. Now I'm going to play around for a little bit - I'll let you know what the result is.

Thanks again,

Mike.

Not handy for those of us who thumb type and/or send to people on dumbphones. Email from phone does not, for me, replicate the convenience of text
