Question Ringtone size limit?

Is there a maximum size or length for a music file to be used as a ringtone?

Thanks.

If I'm not mistaken I think 40 seconds is the max but don't quote me on that I know if i make one using Myxer that is the max it will let me make them. I use audacity now but keep within that limit.

My phone allows me to select any song from the music player as a ringtone though.

Thanks for your replies. Yes, I am able to select any song from the music player too, and use it as a ringtone. But as I am having an ongoing problem with the phone not playing the correct assigned custom contact ringtone, I wondered if the size or length of the file might be the issue.
It was only a long shot though - neither Google nor Samsung have been able to fix the problem.

I have tried using a file that is used on another phone with success. I try it on the phone and it tells me "The song is too big to be setted as ringtone" exact wording. the file is 27 seconds long and 422 KB.

What are the ideal (best) specs to use when creating our own ringtones? For ex. I'm cutting part of a song... should I make it an .mp3 format and 128/96/64, etc..

Depends on the size, too. I use MID. A four minute song can be only 17K. They are harder to edit, and since the files are so small, I just use them. Put one in as a notification ringtone, and got the whole two and a half minutes. Phone wouldn't shut up. Changed that to an mp3.

For use with a phone call, the songs quit when the ring quits.

For me, Any song can be a ringtone, The system just shortens it a bit.

There was a size limitation when you had to use BitPim.

I think 15 seconds is a good guideline to follow. Just use a standard mp3 and use a program to edit the length and fade in and out if you like. At only 15 seconds it should fit the ring length and meet the file size criteria so long as you don't try to make it super high quality like mp3 320. Use mp3 128 bit rate at around the 15 second mark.

my GS3 and i would say my GS4 would tell me in a dialog that a file is too large to use as a ringtone if i hit over a certain undefined limit. not sure if that's a TouchWiz thing or not. i'm happy with the system stock choices though. i got over the MP3 ringtone addiction about the time i got over flip phones. besides, when my phone rings i want a ring, not music. hearing music in my pocket makes me wonder if the phone is actually getting a call or if i inadvertently activated my music player widget in my pocket (done that countless times)
