Default Couldn't make or receive calls (sorted but want peace of mind)

I know this has been covered and i have search and researched it, but no real answer is clear.

Ive had my S2 for about 2 weeks and its worked great. Last night i rang my lady friend as per usual and nothing was at fault.

This evening i went to call and it immediately went to "call ended" i then tried ringing myself using the house phone and it went straight to voice mail.
All other features worked as per normal.

I chatted to a vodafone chimp (on of those people that dont actually know anything but just have a script) using the chat client thingy. But the usual "have you turned it off and on/taken out battery and sim" chat got a bit tedious so i gave up.

I hadnt changed any settings, but decided to have a mess about, and chose my network provider ect and them came across the "Network Mode" setting, and it was set to GSM/WCDMA (Auto mode), which i changed to GSM only.

And hey presto it worked fine, i could call, but didnt have 3g or H connection, i then changed it back to GSM/WCDMA and its been fine...

soo my questions What was this issue? was it network or other, and why is it fine now? and should i be worried that it will repeat?

I havent put it in the S2 section as i dont think its hardware related, as it works fine now and has done for a while soo yeah. sorry for the essay.

dont worry, it happens to every phone, mostly its a problem with the phones and not the network.
so yes, you will have to power cycle the phone from time to time. I usually power cycle my phone 1 or 2 times a week.

Even though telephone communication happens over the GSM network, data is handled by WCDMA (Which is why Verizon and Sprint phones can't call and surf at the same time.) When you changed your settings it forced the phone to renegotiate the GSM connection and registering your phone on the network. My guess is your signal is weak or marginal in your area and your phone is having trouble keeping sync'ed. It could also have been Vodaphone had some tower problems near you that made your phone roam to the next tower with a much weaker signal. If it's a continuing problem, I'd revisit it with Vodaphone and ask them to test the towers in your area. They might not even know about a problem if that's what it is.

my signal is very weak in my area. I have a SureSignal box which provides me with a decent signal using my broadband, but its not very reliable. Soo i guess im assured.

I shall definitely keep my eye on things though, not that im so popular i get rang a lot lol.

Oh oh Ohhhh!!!! well there you go then. AT&T has something similar to your SureSignal box called a MicroCell. Our connection at work is so dodgy that we need to use this to assure calls aren't dropped, but every so often the thing needs a swift kick in the ... ethernet. It still shows online, but i can't call out and calls coming in ring but don't pick up. If that starts happening reboot the thing and it should clear up your issues.
