Default what does it mean when the signal meter changes color

I have a HTC Desire HD rooted with CyanogenMod 7.1.0 and normally the signal bar is green on grey but sometimes it goes dark grey on grey and when it does this i cannot send messages or browse net etc but the wifi signal bar does the same so i dont think its to do with mobile signal but not sure what it means.

Dark grey = no signal
Light grey = you have signal, but you're not synched with Google services
Green = signal and Google sync
