Happy looking for cost effective vanilla android

Hi all,

I had a Samsung something or other (MB611) and the glass busted. I'm looking for an out-of-pocket replacement.

I use corporate sync for email.
Once a week or so I use maps/navigator.
I love swype.
I want a decent quality camera with flash. MP don't impress me. I simply want clear photos.
I need a GSM phone that I can unlock. (I assume all phone are capable of being unlocked for alternative SIM cards?)

That's about it. Option to tether might come in handy, but I'm usually at home on my own wireless network. I don't want a hardware keyboard. I don't use any other apps. My husband and I combined use about 1GB of data every 3 months and I know most of that is his usage.

I don't necessarily want the cheapest android out there, but I have no need for dual processors nor any other costly options. Any resources would be appreciated!

{ETA: I did not actually have a Samsung. It was a Motorola Cliq 2!}

Galaxy W would be a nice investment for someone with your needs IMO. Samsung comes with Swype on board, the others don't. You'll need to manually install it (Its not on Market) if you go away from Samsung.

I can't really make a phone recommendation for you, but I can suggest the classified section of the forum. Great phones up for sale in there all the time.

Thank you!

You know what? I lied. I had a motorola. The MB611 is the Motorola Cliq 2.
It came with Swype preloaded as an option.
It had a hardware keyboard, which I never once used.
The stupid thing has separate glass digitizer on top of the LCD screen and something happened when it was in a hurry to meet a concrete floor.

This is what I had: MOTODEV > Products > CLIQ 2 MB611

I'll take a look at the Galaxy W. Thanks!

Thanks!
I'm certainly not opposed to a gently used phone.
I'll have to do some research first about what type to look for.

Any recommendations for plain and simple other than Galaxy W? That's a $400 phone.

I guess I'll go into a TMobile store and compare phone in person. I just don't want to end up with something known to get poor reviews.

Something cheaper than The GW but similar features? The lowest you can go to with a decent enough camera is the Galaxy Ace Plus. Lower than that you'll be looking at worse cameras, or maybe older second hand models like a Galaxy S (Its the old Epic/Fascinate)

Thanks!
I'll look into those.

I totally don't mind used/refurb. As long as everything works, I'm fine with something a generation or two old. I work from home so battery life isn't significant...

I almost forgot that LG handsets are cheaper than their Moto/Samsung/HTC counterparts but I'm not really sold into the brand.

Seems you're on T-Mobile so you might check out a G2X. Can be had used for around $250 and comes with vanilla Android.

LG Optimus 2x has a dual core Tegra processor with Nvidia all pretty great hardware underneath and the price is competitive. Unless you have less faith in LG over Samsung. But hardware wise I feel this model is worth a second look.

For the OP...The G2X is the T-Mobile variant of the Optimus 2X. The G2X comes with vanilla Android but the Optimus 2X does not.

G2X seems a good model too for the pricing. Pity it ain't offered for sale in my country. Nowadays most upcoming models have dual core processors and for this pricing G2X and LG Optimus 2x are good deal worth consideration. It may not have ICS but for that kind of pricing for those hardware I am willing to give ICS a miss
