Welcome to AF

ICS has brought some video editing to Android stock. I would imagine that it will be expanded upon by 3rd party devs now that it is a native part of the OS of course you would need a phone running ICS to use it. If you are on a device running any older version of Android I don't think there are any real video editing apps available.

Default Android Video Editing

I've been looking over the Market for a good video editor and can't find anything that would be very useable.

I'm a professional video editor and occasionally the only tools I have on hand are my Droid Razr and Asus TF101, both of which are fairly substantial Android devices and should be able to put together some quick videos.

I would like something that would allow trimming of clips and placing in any order I needed. Text overlay. And I would like to be able to put a second video or graphic layer over another section of my screen. Also to be able to render to mpeg2 would be nice.

I don't think that's too much to ask for a 1.2ghz dual core processor.

Give me a fully functional short trial to make sure it's compatible with my device and I'd happily pay for the app.

You should realize that an x86 or x64 processor used by PCs is more powerful than an ARM processor of the same clockspeed. in general, an ARM processors (used in tablets) are vastly more power efficient than the x86 processors used by 32bit computers, however they don't even have enough bandwidth to run single threaded desktop applications, at least not yet. But with that in mind, a 1.6Ghz X86 chip isn't even powerful enough to run a 2 year old video editing software that does what you need (talking about Intel Atom and PowerDirector 8), let alone an ARM processor. Note that even that desktop program (PD 8) can't handle HD videos that you capture with your phone and tablet because you need something more powerful.

In other words, a 1.2Ghz dual core x86>>1.2Ghz dual core ARM in terms of performance and capability. There's more to these chips than just the clockspeed to say that "something shouldn't be too hard for a CPU with XX speed."

I'm not saying its not possible, I'm saying its highly unlikely given that its a hardware limitation. I've only seen one app in the market that claims to do text overlay and the reviews say its absolute crap.

Thanks for explaining the processor difference, I'd never thought about it before.

But I do have to disagree about what can be done. I've been using Vegas Video for about 13 years and it scales to what your system can do. As in, it will run on old systems with limited ram and processor, but it's just really slow.

After I posted this, I found an App called Movie Studio which aparently comes with the Xoom, which will do what I want. It's not rock solid, but I've found some good results. Now I've just got to figure out how to install the apk on my Asus Transformer...

Default Videoeditor

Please please please build a decent videoeditor!! Sorry to mention the A word but my previous smartphone had a program called Splice which did all of this quickly and neatly... I kind of assumed android would have something similar... and was bewildered and shocked when I got a new samsung with a huge scren and 8 megapix camera but had comlaratively pooooor video editing.
Ok so forgive me I am a user and very much non developer.... but to put it simply.... If it was possible on my iphone 4 (not S) then it simply must be possible with the superior processing power of Samsung galaxy.
Please please please someone build this, I don't want to contemplate going back to the apple thing. I am half way round the world with 32 video blogs and want 32 more before I get home

Hi! Be careful what you ask for... Clesh may be what you are after. Some of the app functionality is demonstrated in this series of YouTube videos:

Clesh for Android - background and buttons - YouTube

As a pro, you can switch to a PC or Mac for finishing.
