Default share computer wifi to remove Ads

Hello

My laptop with Linux has a lovely etc/hosts file so I never see any adverts in web pages. I thought if I set up my laptop as a WIFI hotspot then connected to it from my tablet (so I'm viewing the web on my tablet via the computers shared connection) then I would not see adverts.

Right or wrong?

I'm asking because I *thought* I'd got the sharing working but was still seeing Ads. Maybe the sharing was not working or maybe my idea is dumb?

AFAIK the advert blocks only on the PC's browser, it does not include the internet sent. Another problem you'd encounter is that Android by default does not connect to adhoc networks, which are the networks created by laptops. I haven't heard if they have fixed this yet, so a WiFi built by your laptop would be invisible to the tablet.

so far so true on the invisible ad-hoc unfortunately.

as for blocking the ads I still feel it should work as the ads are blocked at root level on the PC and not via some browser or user add on. time will tell.

in the mean time this issue has found a great FIX

ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1922090

a user on the Ubuntu forums suggested opera and an ini file - this combo gives fast smooth browsing and no ads and does not require root or additional software.

The HOSTS file is only used by the computer it belongs to, unfortunately. Android, being Linux-based, has its own HOSTS file that it will use.

I was going to point this out until I seen your post.

The computer is setup to check the host file first if it doesn't resolve the address from the host file it moves to the next phase which is check the ".com,.net, .gov" resolution host (dns)

You can however copy your host file over to the phone if you are rooted. If your not then I'm not sure if the phone will allow you to or not. That is normally a root only thing on the computer so I'm assuming it is also for the phone.
