Hello, I hope this is not a FAQ.

I would like to learn Android app development and I think owning an Android device would be nice... (yes, I know there are emulators, but I would prefer playing with the actual thing).

For starters, would any Android device actually do? Or are cheaper models going to have strong limitations?

(More practically speaking, I have the opportunity to get Samsung Galaxy Fit at a low price: is there any thing that I'd better know/check before buying it?)

I don't care if it's not a terrific phone, all I want is a reasonably fair environment for trying out apps.

If you don't need an actual phone for calling, the Samsung Galaxy Player should work fine. There is a 4 inch and 5 inch screen model. It's similar to the iPod, as you can't make phone calls (or use 3g) but every other aspect is there. Priced at $240 for the 5 inch model, no contract required.
