on android assistant, my huawei m835 says it supports both GSM and CDMA while on certain roms for the ideos u8150 and ascend. what id like to know is if my fon really can pick up gsm signals or if its really possible that my lil metro pcs fon has the hardware capable of such

If you're on the Metro PCS carrier, you can only use CDMA. Metro PCS is a subcontractor to Sprint PCS, who is a CDMA carrier. If you flash GSM firmware onto your device, you could end up making it so it won't work until you flash CDMA firmware onto it. Or get excessive roaming costs.
