went into an exam today at 10am, turned phone off, turned it back on when i came out at 1pm and i had a nice little update notice on my phone
took a while to update but i have cupcake. london uk.
its ****ing sweet.
on a sader not, the little android dude whos on the phones startup screen has sadly left us. replaced with android written in cool steel like looking letters.
rip little android guy.
you will be sorely missed
on a separate note, ui changes are incredibly handsome. subtle, but handsome
Great question!
I asked a similar question on previous page and so far heard nothing...
[sarcasm] I guess the folks here are too busy flaming each other for what to post or not to post in this thread to actually answer a real question that in fact concerns an OTA update (and incidentally rooting too). [/sarcasm]
(climbing under a table to dodge flames from both sides of the named argument)
LEM.
I found this while poking around..

If the new paid app thingy from the market is anything like Apple's appstore, which I suspect it is, you won't have to re-pay for your paid apps. I think it goes against your googlemail account, not the device.
OTA upgrades will be disabled automatically during the process so as not to kill your root. Again use jesusfrekes latest modded firmware (he releases very quickly after T-mobile do and if you want to talk to him regarding this, he is normally in the chat room - use the link on the home page of this site, he's very approachable, and very clever!)
So it may be safe to say that JF's firmware kills OTA updates.

Thanks, from this I also gather that per my original question (non-moded firmware manually installed to skip ahead of line for RC33) the OTA should still be there... So I guess I'll just sit and wait to see if cupcake shows up on my G1 eventually.....
Cupcake showed up on mine yesterday when I went through the process. It was surprisingly easy and I'm quite suprise about the difference it make to my phone.
It just seems so much quicker.
I'm happy.
I'll be keeping root until Google announces a solution for Apps to SD.

As you might be able to tell I use a build that is ADP 1.5 and works with Apps2SD and Special allowance for Old Super User White list
Mine is working wonderfully
270 apps ... and 63mb of free memory

Are you in the UK? What's "the process"?
So far as I can tell, no non-dev phones in the US have recieved 1.5 OTA... I wish someone would prove me wrong.
I'm seriously considering rooting my phone, but I think it's an awful lot of hassle and risk if I can just click a button sometime within the next few days...
another really nice ui change which i havent heard anything about on any forums is that of the background of the notifications thing when its slid down, and the background behind the menu. it looks almost stitched in cupcake. really nice looking.

JF has an app in the Market called "JF Updater" which provides options for downloading and installing his ADP, T-Mobile US and T-Mobile UK builds. (check for updates on a schedule you can set or let's you disable autochecking and check manually.)
As for getting OTA updates after rooting, my understanding is that if you rollback to RC33 you can get OTA updates, but I've not tried this myself (yet.) But T-Mobile specifically states that rooting will prevent you from getting OTA updates. Your mileage may vary.
Interesting responses (and lack thereof) to the 'why not root' question.
An interesting thing to point out, when people post about rooting in the T-Mobile forums, T-Mobile reps alter the post with a red font warning at the top of the posts, but they don't specifically say that rooting will void your warranty. and they politely thank the person who posted the info on rooting. The warranty is for the hardware, so it is an interesting conundrum for them I'll bet.
I feel like, if i rooted my phone today. Tomorrow the OTA.
The link above is an official release so no need to root. I'm not and never have had root and applied the update tonight with no problems. In addition you will still get future OTA updates.

OMG i couldnt wait for the OTA SOOOOOO I followed the video instructions made my "Several" and am a radio update away from 1.5!! OH SNAP the android robot is gone, now shows a blue "Android" icon mmmmmmmmm DELISH WOOOOOOOOT
I rooted my phone more out of impatience than anything else. There is much I like about cupcake. I'm using JF's ADP1.5 build. I may try some of the others... If I understand it correctly JF may be producing a regular 'end user' type ROM soon...
But... No Amazon downloader (not end of world), not Latitude in Maps... it just seems annoying.
BUT whatever they did to clean up the GPS code really seems to work! Telenav would typically take a few minutes to get a fix in the morning/first use of day. Now it gets a fix quickly. Handstand was reporting accuracy to 6 meters while I was driving at about 30 MPH.
I came for the Cupcake... but I might hang onto my rootness for the apps on SD card. IF I get motivated enough to actually do it...
What link? I'm in the US and that link was for UK.
To tell you the truth, this is how t-mo is going to lose its customers, horrible service, super small 3g, inconsistency with expansion plans, and the OTA are just plain random!!!
With everyday that passes with no cupcake, urges me to switch to At&T or verizon.

Unfortunately, the OTA updates (or lack thereof) are all on the Google side, Tmo has no control over that. However, I do agree with you about the lack of coverage. I am moving to the FL area in a few months, and Tmo has almost no coverage out there. I plan on switching to ATT, but keeping my G1! I may not stay a Tmo customer, but I'll be an Android user till the day I die.
Side note: I got tired of waiting and rooted my G1 and applied JF's 1.5 ADP build. Freaking loving it!!
Been a while since I have been here, life gets in the way of forums sometimes. I got my cupcake this morning, I'm loving it except the UK still hasn't got voice control for searching and dialling

trust me. . .i'd much rather have my OTA Cupcake than voice seach here in the US. . .
Got my OTA update in the UK last night. Its made the phone even better to use... the things that slowed the experience down like when taking and browsing pictures have gone and it works a dream.
The software keyboard is great, now I can write a text one handed on the train.
I havent read the thread as there seems to be a lot of ranting. Im a UK user, non rooted and got an update this morning giving me a camcorder, new logos, new start up screen, changes to my browser, text messages and google talk and the phones general theme... not sure what else yet x
Polished UI with much nicer icons for apps..
Fantastic features.
Camcorder (Video Recorder) works like a dream. Although I'm not sure if it was because I wasn't talking loud enough but the volume on the videos I made didn't seem very loud...
Google Talk replaces my IM button..
Virtual keyboard is great (I'm actually better than I thought I would be at using the keyboard...I thought I'd suck and make loads of mistakes...)
Orientation seems to be a bit odd...it coudl just be me though...
More to come....when I get a chance to look at it some more...
