Default Best Buy vs VZ going to switch to Verizon for some Razr Maxx's, etc and was told something odd....

When I talked to Verizon, two reps both told me that I need to go to a Verizon store and not get the phones through BB. Because they said I will be signing up with a separate contract through BB and one through them, and if I had to change my plan within the first 6 months on any phone, I would get charged the full price for the phone. Is that true/ They said BB works like Amazon, same thing.

Best buy has the $50 per phone gift cards that I can get for paying the same price. That's $150 back in my pocket, and I also have $60 in rewards points already that I could put towards the purchase of the new phones. I rather go there, but if this is a issue, I rather not! Please let me know.

Also one other question, if I have an older verizon 3G phone, can I activate that off of contract so I don't have to get a contract on that one line?

Most 3rd party retailers have a clause in the agreement that you must stay on the contract for a certian period of time or get charged for the phone or a fee. This is because the get paid for selling the contract and if you cancel within that time period they lose that money.

You could activate the old phone as an additional line not on contract I believe but you would not receive any discount on the third phone and you would be charged full price for the phone not 2 year contract price. You may still be able to get the gift card but I don't think it will be worth it since you will be paying $300 more out of pocket initially.

Thanks for the response. If I added the old phone to a 3rd line, no contract, and later decide we need a new phone, I can get a discount then and get on a contract at that time right? I would assume so. Guess I will forfit the $50 gift cards at Best Buy and go straight to Verizon to do this then.

I would double check with Best Buy on this. I don't recall them having that 6 month clause that Amazon, Wirefly, etc have, though I could be wrong.

I worked for Bestbuy mobile over the holidays and they have no policy like that. If you are going to get insurance you are also much better off getting it from bestbuy than Verizon also, and if you don't buy your phone at bestbuy you normally can not get their insurance.

I think the penalty or whatever you want to call it is if you break the contract, not change your plan. If you plan on staying with Verizon for mor than six months, I'd grab the free money from BB. Sounds like the VZW folks were trying to protect their own commissions.

I upgraded the wife's phone for half the cost of VZW and got my son a DX2 for $0.01 on Amazon and they have a similar agreement. The $280 savings was well worth the risk that I would cancel the VZW service I have had for over a decade. And I have made alterations to both of those phone plans since I upgraded with no blowback from Amazon or VZW.
