Hello all - I'm new to this forum and to my Droid Razr. I'm not sure this post will be of value to anyone but I had a lot of trouble getting my Droid to receive and send E Mail via my Cox account. I'm in southern Cal and I've noticed quite a few requests from other Cox service markets for help fixing this. Perhaps this information will be a help to others...
Remember this is for the Droid Razr as I have not tested these results on any other Droid so I'm not sure this would work for other models.
INCOMMING via Cox.Net
1. Get to your APPS screens and tap My Accounts
3. Tap your Email icon
2. Click on ADD account at the very bottom of your screen (if you have not tried to set up Cox already) If you have tried to set up Cox and your attempt did not work I suggest you simply remove that account and start over.
3. You will now go to General settings where you’ll have a few items to type in.
4. At the Account name window type the word Cox.
5. In the Real name window type in your real name as you want others to see it.
6. In the Email address window type in your full E mail address such as
xxxxx@cox.net (As I understand it here in the western states and in CAL you no longer need the word West in any of the Cox id lines.)
7. You will now go to the Incoming server settings. I do recommend you manually set up your Email account as opposed to allowing the AUTO setup as I have never found it to work on any mobile phone as well as the manual input does. The problem is the assumption that the AUTO configuration will make your phone Email work and if it does not work you may not know why.
8. In the Server box, since Cox is a POP mail server for most of us you'll type in pop.cox.net in the Server box.
9. In the Username box you'll type in ONLY your username (do not add the @ sign or cox.net after it) For example.... let's say your name is XXXXX you will enter ONLY that, not
XXXXX@cox.net.
10. In the Password box you'll type in your password. Be very sure you KNOW what your password is. I know it sounds crazy but I've had several different passwords over the years with Cox and have had problems remembering them all - I now write all this down in the notes section of my mobile phone. If you do not know your password you’ll need to call Cox customer service for help in resetting your password then you can at least change it to your preference if you wish.
11. Once you have completed this you can tap the bar that says Advanced Settings
12. Here you will type in the port number 995 and note that this port requires that you check Use secure connection.
13. In the Use secure password (TLS) you must select NEVER.
14. In the Authentication box select Password.
15. You are now done with the incoming mail settings and you can hit OK then VERIFY SERVER to be sure all is working okay. (Good luck)If you see the message SUCCESS you can move on to the outgoing Email settings.
16. You will now set up the OUTGOING settings. The first box is the SMTP server. In this box you will type smtp.cox.net (three words and two dots, no spaces)
17. In the Username box you'll type in your FULL username such as
XXXXX@cox.net.
18. In the Password box type in your password as you did for the incoming setup.
19. Now tap the Advanced settings bar.
20. For the Port type in 465
21. Tap the checkbox to Use secure connection
22. In the Use secure password (TLS) select NEVER
23. In the Authentication box type select AUTO
24. Click OK
25. Tap the Verify Server bar and again GOOD LUCK – if you get the message SUCCESS you can test the service from your Droid by sending yourself a quick message. Having said all this there are a few notes you should be aware of….
NOTES
A. If you want your Droid to get your Email for you I suggest you set it to do this manually, not automatically. Why? First it adds drain on your battery to automatically download your Email. Second there’s little point in having your phone fetch your Email more often than you can read it, so better to fetch it manually when you can read it or are looking for a specific Email.
B. How do you set it to manually fetch your Email? Tap your Email icon, then tap on the MENU selection at the very bottom left of your phone. From here you’ll tap Email Settings, then Email delivery. Finally, you’ll tap on Fetch schedule and the rest is pretty self-evident. Just select the Manually Fetch option. Then when you get to your Email you’ll see a double arrow circle near the upper right. Just tap that and presto, if there’s Email available on your Cox server you’ll download it to your Droid.
C. This note is important… if you use a mail client such as OUTLOOK at your desk there’s a good chance you have Outlook set to take the Email off the Cox server when it is downloaded to your desk computer. Therefore, if you leave your desk and leave Outlook turned on, it will download your Email as often as you have set it up to do and will take that Email off the server in the process. Therefore, there will be none or just a few Emails for your Droid to download and this will make you think that there is something wrong with your phone Email setup. There is a good chance Cox may not even let you access your Email because the account can’t be accessed by several devices at one time. I suspect this is simply a security feature and if so, it makes sense to me. Bottom line… if you’re leaving your desk and know that you’ll want to use your Droid to fetch any Emails beyond what you have already downloaded to your desk mail client then turn that client off (quit the application). In my case I’d quit Outlook and only turn it on when I get back to my desk.
Hope this helps some of us. Sorry for the rather large post here but I sure could have used this information over the past two weeks standing in lines and waiting on hold to get these answers.
Best to all!
