Default Unlocked handsets

Hi all

Since the death of my lovely desire, I have been on the look out for a used sensation to take over the rest of my contract. My desire was bought from CPW on 3, so it was unbranded from new.

I have been looking on fleabay, and lots of handsets are unlocked, or I could buy a branded hanset and get it unlocked to use on 3. My question though; what is unlocking? Is it flashing the ROM so it is like an unbranded handset or is something done to the ROM to allow any sim? so the ROM would still be for example O2 but would allow me to use my 3 sim? If this is the case, how do you get updates?

Unlocking means allowing any network's SIM to be used, nothing more. It's commonly a matter of entering a code, though there are other solutions (for the GSM Desire there's a free utility that will unlock the phone). It's separate from flashing the ROM - you can unlock without rooting, and you can flash a custom ROM and still be network locked.

Not sure about updates, since it's a very long time since I had official updates on my phone .
