Notification: "Low on space Phone storage space is getting low"

I've had my a10 for a while now probably just over a year. I haven't had too many problems with it so far only just the occasional lag and force close (it runs 2.1 froyo by the way) however just a few days ago it ran into some major problems.

it happened when my phone told me there were updates for some of my apps so of course i installed them however it got to the stage where they were not progressing in their downloads at all and whenever i tried to do anything most apps would crash and eventually the entire system repeatedly crashed.

later i managed to get it working again however a notification appeared tell me it was low on space. I deleted many of my apps but it is still there and now it wont let me use the messaging app either (i can still receive and make calls).

from reading some other threads i think i have discovered that it may be a 'tombstone' issue and following some advice to others i can see that there are some core dumps there (viewed using connectbot while rooted) however im not sure what to do with them or how to get rid of them

i also already have ASTRO on my phone.

any advice would be much appreciated

Not familiar with the phone, but I believe it has a SD card. Have you moved all the Apps that will move onto the SD?

I have a HTC Desire where memory is a problem, and moved as much as I could onto the card. This frees up some memory on the phone then.

App 2 SD is a good free and paid for app that will do that for you, it also offers to clear out the cache every so often and this again frees up some memory.

Thanks but ive had the phone set to store on sd card by default for a while and both the phone itself and the card both gave over 2gb of space free which makes me think that the phone may not like realise theres actually space on it.

If that app doesnt work or i cant get it should i do a hard reset or will that not change anything?

Settings > applications > manage > Maps > uninstall updates. Same for Street View.

That trick has kept my eensy-weensy Optimus alive for over a year. The Maps update is just ginormous.
