Default speech to text won't work with punctuation

Whenever I use voice recognition to send a text, it spells out the punctuation instead of inserting the punctuation. For example it will type the words "comma" and "period" instead of putting a comma or period. It has rendered voice-to-text useless. Is there a way to fix this?

Using Samsung galaxy s2, google voice 2.1, gingerbread.
