Default Frustrated about ringtones!

Hey, a few days ago I bought myself a Samsung GALAXY S 2 LTE and though I have fallen in love with the phone, I'm still very confused and equally frustrated over how to get ringtones. I know there is a way to get them onto the androids without buying them, it's that part that is giving me the issue.

Although there are probably many threads alike this one, I can not seem to find one with my specific problems. So, let me just give some information on what I have done with my phone in the past week.

-I downloaded a song from the store, and had a hard time getting it to show up in the list of default ringtones. So I googled a bit, came across a forum telling me to plug the android in, and make a custom folder called "ringtones" so I did that, and moved my downloaded file into that folder. The bought ringtone works fine now.
-In search of finding free ringtones, I downloaded one from Audiko. I downloaded the MP3 file, and tried dragging it into my ringtones folder. I went to settings, sounds, phone ringtone but now my phone ringtone tab is completely greyed out. I tried removing the mp3 file from the ringtones folder, I restarted my phone, and it's still completely greyed out.

My questions are:
-How do you guys get mp3 files to play as a ringtone on your galaxy S2?
-Why is the phone ringtones tab blanked out now, and how do I regain access to it?

Please note I am not very tech savvy, so as much detail and straight forward information as you can provide will be really helpful to me. Thank you.

Update: I was able to fix the blanked out spot, I just turned the volume up and it unblanked. But I still need help on exactly what to do to get mp3 ringtones onto my phone.

On any Android phone, you can use a file manager to create a folder on the root of the sd card called Ringtones (note the capital "R"). Place them in there and they will be included, along with all the stock ringtones the next time you open a menu asking for rington selection.

Otherwise, you can use an app such as Zedge to get ringtones to your phone while on your phone.

just throw mp3s on your phone and then use ringtones maker app to cut the part of the song you want and set it. It's way easier than trying to download actual ringtones
