Default How does Contacts (Address Book) work?

Sorry of this has been covered elsewhere, but I am more than a little confused about the whole contact business.

I have just bought an Samsung Galaxy XCover running Android 2.3. As far as I can tell it has phone memory, SIM card memory and an additional 2Gig Micro SD card.

I think that all contacts are stored as VCFs. The store where I got the phone moved over some 248 of my 460 contacts from my old Nokia N95 but not all of them. I do not know why they could not move them all and I do not know where they put them (i.e which bit of memory).

I have downloaded the Samsung 'Kies' app (Windows version) which is supposed to manage user-created data (i.e. back up and sync contacts, music, photos and video).

Selecting ‘Contacts’ on Kies produces three tabs where contacts are stored, the first is ‘Mobile Phone’, the second is named with my Googlemail address and the third is the SIM card. Kies loads the Mobile Phone list automatically. When I select the Googlemail tab nothing happens (I assume I have no contacts stored there). When I select the SIM card it starts to download the contacts and finally reaches 100% and then nothing. I have left it running for several hours but the spinning icon just keeps spinning and no list ever appears.

Kies offers another option which is to look at the phone using Windows Explorer. All I can see in Explorer is the 2Gig Micro SD (no Phone Memory or SIM card). On the 2 Gig card is a folder called Others / Contacts which has all my contact VCFs. I have managed to find the missing 228 VCF records on the old Nokia and copied them to the contacts folder on the 2Gig Micro. But they do not appear in the Galaxy contact list.

I removed the 2 Gig from the Galaxy and the contact list was still visible in the phone.

So I finally get to my questions: I assume my contacts are stored in Phone Memory. If not, where are they?

Can I 'see' the Phone Memory (or whereever the contacts are) in Windows Explorer?

How do I add the last 228 VCFs to wherever they are?

What is the Googlemail storage location?

Many thanks
