Default noob ROM question

Hi All,

First post here. Apologize for the noob post but i've got some questions that others have asked but didn't seem to find any concrete answers.

I've got a Rogers HTC Magic (32A) running latest official ROM.
Would like to try out some alternate ROM's but wanna be smart about it:

Is there a way to do a good safe backup of my current offical ROM as a fallback point?

Yes, the best way is to do a Nandroid backup. I think most custom recovery partitions include this. With your Nandroid backup you can restore the phone to the exact condition it was in when you made the backup.
