Default Car Navigation: Department of Redundancy Department

Car manufacturers love to sell you very expensive GPS systems. They’re also happy to sell you music connectivity, phone books, text and tweet, traffic data, weather, etc. etc.

But I already have all that. On my phone. All I really need is a nice big screen and a plug. Why can’t car manufacturers sell a car with a screen and allow smartphones to connect in the same way that I plug an external monitor into my laptop. (Oh, because they can and they want the extra profit.) But wouldn’t that be a nice feature – BYO to a built-in screen?

<sigh> Car docks or $2,500 for now. </sigh>

Amen my friend. I think that is the next step in auto entertainment/navigation. I think a few are already working on it too. Unfortunately, the iPhone is winning out here, (BMW comes to mind). However with as big as the screens are getting on phones, its almost to the point where I would just like a centrally located dock. Make it an option, but something more integral to the car, as opposed to a dock hanging from the windshield (which I can't stand).

Mostly because it's easier to support iOS devices. Every year Apple comes out with one iPhone, one iPod Touch (sometimes they even skip this) and one iPad. That means there's only a limited number of devices and form factors you need to support.

There are way too many Android devices available with different form factors, different microUSB port location, etc and Android phone manufacturers release 3 or more models every year. There's no standard similar to AirPlay and not all phones have HDMI output.

Imho, Google and Android phone manufacturers should band together to create a standard for this. Otherwise, I don't really see car manufacturers switching to or at least adding support for Android smartphones instead of just the iPhone/iPod/iPad.

Your idea is all fine and good but the issue is that there is no standard for this. We dont even have a standard for digital audio out let alone video.

Very fair point.

I hate it when I see people talking let alone texting while driving. But navigation and radio are at least slightly different in my estimation.

Mark Twain once said "fighting progress is like fighting the sunrise." So I fear that we're stuck with in care technology.

I'd prefer for anything like this to run over bluetooth, rather than like an mhl video output to a big touchscreen.
